Overwhelmed by back pain and analysis paralysis, please help

I never knew buying a mattress would be so overwhelming!

Target budget of $1200-1500; could go up to $2,000 max

My Situation I am 5’5”, 250 lbs. I have fibromyalgia, degenerative disk and other health issues. Lower back pain. Some neck pain too, both caused or exacerbated by mattress and/or pillows I believe. Very hot natured. (My husband is 6’ 185 lbs with mild-moderate sleep apnea).

I have slept on many mattresses over the years. I always sleep varying degrees of poor to fair according to my experience and my Fitbit. Recently stayed at a Club Wyndham and had the best 3 nights of sleep I’ve had ever. That gave me hope, but I still don’t know how to replicate it.

Please help.

Hi FibroOverwhelmed.

I see you have another post in our forum which I haven’t looked at yet, so apologies if I don’t quite cover all of your concerns in my reply!

I did a quick Google search to see if I could find the model of mattress Wyndham offers, and found this interesting PDF. As you can see, they over several different models in their hotels, so without knowing exactly which model you slept on, it’d be hard to help you recreate it.

That said, replicating a bed almost never goes the way one hopes it will, and it’s either best to 1. just buy the bed you know you like or 2. build yourself a bed entirely based on your specs, preferences, needs, etc and forget about trying replicate feel

This PDF lists 6 different models. I bet if you reach out to the hotel and ask which model they carry, someone will know!

As for budget, I’d recommend you read this section of our budget article.

I hope this helps get your started!

Because of the size difference and different ailments it would best to go to a king or split queen adjustable base. This way u can get two different mattresses. This can be expensive but for 4 or 5000 to get the comfort you need its worth the purchose. You spend a third of your life in bed looking for a 1200 mattress. But yet people spend 40000 on a car theyll only use 1 or 2 hours a day. It makes no sense. Combfort of life comes first. Avoid memory foam for yourself, or, you will sink into a crater and never be able to get out.

I literally said my target was $1200-1500 but could go up to $2,000 and you choose to focus on my absolute lowest end to criticize. We are a very low income family. $2,000 is already very much stretching it but I am willing to do it because I know it’s important. $5k on a mattress is all well and good for those who can afford it, but many of us cannot.

PS—we also can’t afford a $40k vehicle. Enjoy your privilege.

Just scroll in next time instead of criticizing.

Hi FibroOverwhelmed,

I’m really sorry to hear about your frustration. I’m not sure which comment you’re referring to, but I want to reassure you that we, as staff, never intend to criticize anyone—especially when offering advice. Our goal is always to be helpful and supportive.

Regarding your mattress search, there are certainly quality options available for every budget. For example, Club Wyndham often uses the Beautyrest Hospitality line. Based on your description, it sounds like their Cape Breton model, which is priced around $1600 for a queen and closer to $2000 for a king.

However, I’d like to offer a word of caution when considering hotel or hospitality mattresses. While they can feel comfortable, they’re designed for limited use and typically replaced every 3-5 years, which is something to keep in mind. Many people find that even a moderately priced mattress will feel great if they’re used to an old, uncomfortable one at home. But on a trip or in a hotel, the quality of a mattress may seem more luxurious simply due to the difference in environment.

If you’re still searching for a mattress that fits your needs and budget, here are a few suggestions I think you might find helpful:

  1. @DLX Classic Hybrid in Medium Firmness – This is a solid, affordable choice that stays well within your budget. It also comes with a great “no hard feelings” guarantee, which I think you’ll appreciate.
  2. @Magic_Sleeper – They offer an interesting selection of mattresses that might suit your needs. For example, their Bel Air Luxury Plush mattress is comparable to Beautyrest and might push the upper end of your budget, but with the TMU discount, a king-size mattress would come in just under your $2000 target, and a queen would fit comfortably within your budget.

What sets @Magic_Sleeper apart is their excellent customer service and warranty. While most national brands offer a 10-year warranty, they provide a 20-year non-prorated warranty, which is a significant advantage. If you’re located outside of Pennsylvania, it’s worth checking the freight costs before ordering. Many bed-in-a-box companies offer free shipping, which can save you considerable amount of money freight wise while offering superior mattress offerings that rival even the best S or Legacy brands out there.

At the end of the day, we understand that everyone’s comfort level and budget are different, and we respect that. I truly hope you find a mattress that fits your needs and that you’re able to enjoy many years of comfortable sleep.

Wishing you all the best in your search! If you have any questions, TMU is always here to help!

We understand the challenges of fibromyalgia and degenerative disks. Each condition is unique, and it can be difficult to find a mattress that provides comfort.

In these cases, we usually recommend shopping locally, where you can try the mattress before you buy it. If there is a local manufacturer in your area, they may be better equipped to assist with post-sale adjustments to the mattress.

Something to consider is that the Wyndham mattress experience may be a red herring. People often sleep better on vacation, and sleep quality scores tend to improve. The main reason is that they are more active during the day—physical activity significantly enhances sleep quality. On vacation, you may get 2–3 times more steps, spend more time outside in fresh air and sunlight, and feel more relaxed, away from the stresses and worries of daily life. The challenge lies in returning home and maintaining that same level of activity, fresh air, and sunlight in your daily routine.

To better assist you and determine if a DLX mattress could be a good option, it’s helpful to know what mattresses you’ve owned in the past. Were they too hard or too soft? What did you like or dislike about them? Providing details such as the brand, model name, and firmness rating would also be very important.

Hello Fibro,

I just came across your post and am so sorry to hear of the sleep issues.

We have a customizable latex option, the Healthy Choice Sage The price is reduced 30% for Black Friday. It is a little over your price range, but it does include a layer swap after purchase if you need it. It’s high quality and durable, and the top soft latex layer (with your choice of firmness underneath) provides cushioning as well as support. There is wool quilted into the cover, which is sometimes helpful too.

Best wishes to you - I hope you find a mattress that works for you. Let us know via chat or phone call if we can help.
