Overwhelmed latex shopper, side/back sleeper, budget under $2k

Hi everyone! I’m hoping some fresh eyes can help me out because I’ve been going back and forth for weeks on end and I think I’ve officially fallen down the research rabbit hole.

About me:

  • 29, female, 138 lbs, thin/average build
  • Mostly a side and back sleeper. When I do end up on my stomach I’m not fully flat, I hug a queen size pillow under my hip, leg and torso
  • No back issues. The only pain I deal with is occasionally waking up sore in my shoulders and neck
  • I’ve slept on an all foam mattress for 10+ years, so I’m used to that sinking in feeling, but I’d like to get away from polyfoam because of the heat
  • Budget is under $2k. Under $1.5k would be even better, but I worry about quality at that price. There do seem to be a lot of sales going on right now though and I’d like to take advantage of that

What I’ve tried in person:

  • Avocado Green with the pillowtop, medium: I really liked the feel, and it’s the only latex mattress I can try locally. I’m hesitant because of the reviews about sagging and people saying it feels firmer at home than in the store. I also bought an Avocado pillow and I’m returning it because it’s way too hard for me, which makes me a little nervous about the mattress too.
  • Bear Natural: it was good/alright, and I liked the price point better.
  • I also tried a bunch of “mainstream” mattresses, like Serta, Tempur-Pedic (way out of my price range), Helix (I liked the Sunset Elite, but again too $$$$), Purple (hated it), and Stearns & Foster (they were okay I guess). My mom had the 2018 Beautyrest Black and I loved it.

What I’m considering:

  • A Talalay latex mattress, since I’ve read it tends to feel plusher than Dunlop. I’ve never actually tried Talalay though because I haven’t been able to find a local store that has one in the showroom
  • Harvest Green: there aren’t many recent reviews and I can’t tell if that’s a good sign or a bad one
  • Sleep EZ hybrid latex
  • Engineered Sleep Duo Latex Plus: I like that the top can be swapped out instead of the entire mattress
  • Naturepedic Serenade: I have a hard time imagining what it would feel like
  • Leesa x West Elm Natural: since it has both latex and memory foam, I wondered if it might be a safe bet given what I’m used to

My questions:

  1. Would a regular/tight top mattress plus a separate topper be a good alternative to a pillowtop? Are there downsides to going that route?
  2. For my size and sleep positions, would you lean Talalay or Dunlop for the comfort layer, and roughly what firmness?
  3. Is there anything on my list you’d cross off or move to the top?

I know mattresses are personal and comfort is subjective, but every time I read a bad review I change my mind again. Any help would be so appreciated!
