Hey there ThePlayFairy,
Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround and thanks for sharing all those details, you’re definitely not alone in how tricky mattress shopping can be, especially as a lighter side sleeper with specific comfort needs.
The Mlily cool hybrid it is hard to determine which firmness your son has. Additionally, the mattress utilizes a perimeter edge foam encasement. So depending on where you sleep on the mattress combined with your sleep position, you may have different results. I am an edge of the bed sleeper, and much larger than you. 6’ 220 broad shoulders. Mattresses with perimeter foam edge support, depending on the overall construction can cause me some soreness issues, much like I experienced last week on vacation.
Regarding trials and returns. While trial periods are a valuable safety net and it’s totally understandable not to want to be stuck with something that doesn’t work, it’s important not to treat them as a “buy and try” strategy. There are real costs involved for both you and the manufacturer when mattresses are returned, logistics, materials, and even environmental impact. Most people’s mindset shifts once they know they can just send it back if it doesn’t work out. Many aren’t even willing to give it a full month or try a simple topper adjustment, they just want to return it or keep returning bad choices immediately. But that’s not a thoughtful or sustainable approach to buying a mattress.
It’s often better to work directly with a manufacturer who builds their mattresses from the ground up and has the ability to customize or modify them based on your feedback. These companies are usually better equipped to adjust firmness, layering, or zoning to suit your needs more precisely, which can lead to a much better long-term outcome.
That said, a few pre-designed, direct-to-consumer mattresses that might work well for someone petite like yourself include the Brooklyn Bedding Signature Hybrid, the Helix Sunset or Midnight (with the Cloud Pillow Top option) available @yawnder, the @WinndomMattress Azalea mattress. The @BackScience backscience3 may work too, and it is customizable, so you could work with them to fine tune anything that is not quite right.
Hopefully, this gives you a head start on what to look for.
