I’ve been lurking here for a month or two, gearing up to buy a new mattress when I move at the end of summer. I think I’ve made the decision to go with the Ultimate Hybrid from mattresses.net with a Zinus foundation. I don’t have any questions really (unless someone wants to try to talk me out of it). I mostly wanted to express my gratitude for this forum and in particular for Phoenix, who from what I can tell is the world’s #1 mattress knowledge fountain and takes the time to respond to everyone :).
I’ll update this in a few months when I get the mattress if I can remember to. Thanks, and sleepy tighty!
Do you have a link to the Zinus foundation you plan to use? I’d be interested to get Phoenix’s take on that. Apparently Arizona Premium feels they are an adequate base for the coils. (Someone on Reddit just reported that Arizona actually encouraged him to go the more affordable Zinus route).
But it seems like the coils would need better support that that or they’d start seeping through the gaps in the foundation, right?
Thank you for the very kind words. And I’m glad that the information presented here was helpful to you in your mattress shopping process.
The mattress you’re considering does use durable materials, and I do think highly of mattresses.net (a site member here), so if you choose that product it would be a better quality choice. Some of the foundations from Zinus may not be the best choice for your mattress, but you didn’t link to which one you were considering so I can’t comment upon that.
I hope you do so. I’ll be interested in your feedback.

That one linked is the exact one I was looking at: Zinus Foundation. Looks like that user said Ken recommended it, but I would definitely love to hear Phoenix’s thoughts!
Thanks for the response on the platform you’re considering (Zinus Elite SmartBase).
The first thing to do is always to check with the mattress manufacturer you’re considering and ask their opinion to make sure that the foundation is appropriate and doesn’t void your warranty (which apparently you already did).
With that being said, I personally would be uncomfortable with the gaps between the rails, as they are on different levels, which effectively leaves about a 6" gap (doing rough math from the photo and feedback from a few people who have purchased the frame) between the side to side rails that would be the first to contact the bottom of the mattress.
I’m not sure of the thickness of these side to side rails, but if they were similar to a typical cross slat material (.75"), I would consider placing cross slats in the gaps between these side to side rails (1x4s, which measure about .75" x 3.5") to minimize the gaps and create a more contact area for the mattress at the same level as it rests upon this platform base. Short of that, even a coir bed rug would be assistive, but not as good as the slats, in distributing the load over this area.
All manufacturers are different in what they recommend for their products. Savvy Rest is one of the newest offerings in the pocketed spring line in a component system, and they recommend only a 2" gap between support structures (slats) with their pocketed spring unit, which I personally would be more comfortable with than the gaps on this Zinus base.
