Platform bed (rigid, non-slatted) vs flexible slats

I recently purchased a bonnell mattress, which I put on the bed base I already owned. That is, a completely flat wooden surface.
The mattress is very uncomfortable and firmer than it was in the store. The company’s saying that the bed base ‘doesn’t matter’ and it should work on both my base and on sprung slats.
I never bothered with them again and asked a local furniture company instead. The man at the store told me that the mattress would become a bit softer and provide better comfort if I were to switch my platform with flexible (sprung slats)
Is it worth the money? Is there a huge different when it comes to mattress feel, between a rigid platform base and sprung slats, or did I simply purchase a sub-par mattress and that’s the end of it?
Thanks for reading

Hi Ishmael_1.

The frame certainly can affect mattress feel. Solid boards make your mattress feel a lot firmer as they are designed to offer more support by adding pressure to your mattress. A sprung slatted base can help to “soften” the feel and provide more flexible support as it is made to move with your mattress throughout the night.

I hope this helps!

Would you say that a sprung-slatted base would help my hips and shoulder sink more into the mattress and thus provide better alignment to my spine? I’m a side sleeper and this is what I mostly struggle with on my current set-up. I believe it’s called ‘point pressure relief’ in english.
Or would that be an issue that starts and ends with mattress quality and firmness?

Hi Ishmael_1.

Good question. A lot of things factor into proper alignment, including the firmness of the mattress and the height of your pillow. An adequate base can play a role, but since it’s quite far from the body, the things most likely to affect alignment are the pillow and mattress itself.

Of course, a mattress with proper support underneath is going to have the best performance in terms of spinal alignment, as well.
