Hello all,
After much deliberation we purchased a mattress earlier this fall from Mattress Makers San Diego, specifically their Soledad latex hybrid. Our platform bed frame arrived after the mattress and I realized the slats are further apart than is ideal.
I’m looking at two companies on Etsy that sell solid pine boards in a bed slat roll. One provides 13 cross slats 3 1/2" wide x 3/4" thick, with spacing between the boards of 2 5/8". The other offers cross slats 2 3/8" wide x 5/8" thick, with spacing of 1" (whatever number of boards that calculates to). These will screw into the existing solid wood side rails and solid wood center support of our frame.
For a latex hybrid, where we have TPS springs on the bottom, does anyone have any thoughts on whether one of these options will offer better support than the other–larger and thicker boards with wider spacing, or smaller slightly thinner (but not thin) boards with closer spacing? Welcome @SDMattressMakers opinion on this especially!
I’m not looking for substitute foundations that will raise the profile of the bed as we don’t want to raise the height of the mattress further.
Thanks!
You can add extra slats to your existing bed frame.
I’ll probably go with the thicker set if no one has any other views?
Hey Allenk9y9.
I wanted to give @SDMattressMakers a chance to chime in before giving my two cents.
Both of those slat options would technically work, but for a latex hybrid with pocket coils, the closer-spaced set (1" gaps between slats) will offer better and more consistent support over time. Latex and pocket coil systems are flexible, so tighter spacing helps prevent any long-term sagging or uneven wear.
The slightly thinner boards shouldn’t be an issue as long as they’re well-secured to the rails and center support. Most manufacturers recommend slat gaps of 2" or less, so your second option aligns best with that standard.

Hi Allen9y9, sorry for the late reply. I’m guessing you may have already sorted this out, but I wanted to chime in for anyone else who runs into the same question.
I agree with NikkiTMU that closer slat spacing is always the better option. It gives the mattress more even support and keeps the springs from dipping into the gaps over time.
Something we’ve recommended to customers who don’t want to buy extra slats and also don’t want to raise the height is using masonite pegboard. It keeps the breathability, covers the larger gaps, and still gives solid support without changing the profile of the bed. See pic for reference.
Hope this helps!

Thanks! The 1” spaced slats arrived last week and I definitely feel the difference in support.
