Please help me choose a mattress

Well, it’s that time again. It seems like no matter how much we spend or what type we choose we always end up needing a new mattress at around the five-year mark. It started when our Tempur-pedic Cloud Supreme simply became too soft for us. Then for the last 10 years, we have had two different Lucid Latex hybrid mattresses. We really loved the Lucid mattresses, but now we are both waking up with lower back pain. The best sleep I’ve had in years was at a Hilton on a Serta Perfect Sleeper Suite Dreams II, but I know it probably wouldn’t last in the long run. However, it got me rethinking going back to a hybrid innerspring mattress. After extensively reading reviews on this site, I think I’ve narrowed it down to the DLX Premier Hybrid, the Back Science Series 2, or a Ghostbed (which is carried by a local store here). We both flip-flop through the night, but are primarily side sleepers. The DLX seems to be the most economical, but I really like the extra lumbar feature of the Back Science. I would really love any input that anyone is willing to offer. We live in Melbourne, Florida and are both in our early 50’s.

@BackScience

Thanks for sharing all that—it’s incredibly helpful context. Given what you’ve described, there’s a good chance we can get you comfortable on the DLX Premier Hybrid. One unique feature of the Premier is the zippered top, which allows you to adjust the comfort even after you’ve slept on it—making it easier to fine-tune the feel if it turns out too soft or too firm.

Since you’re both primarily side sleepers and have found some mattresses too soft over time, we’d love to make a more tailored recommendation. If you don’t mind sharing your approximate height and weight, that would help us dial in the ideal firmness and profile height to better support you.

Thanks again for considering DLX, and happy to help however we can!

It sounds like you’re looking for a durable and supportive mattress that can accommodate your and your partner’s sleeping styles, and you’re interested in the potential benefits of a hybrid design. As a chiropractor and mattress designer for the last 25 years, I have had the unique perspective of seeing how customers have done with every brand you can think of and I definitely understand the importance of finding a mattress that provides the right balance of comfort and support, especially for combination sleepers and those with back pain.

You’ve narrowed down your choices to some good options, and I can definitely offer some insights, particularly regarding the Back Science Series 2.

Here’s why the Back Science Series 2 Hybrid might be a great choice for you and your spouse:

  • Support and Spinal Alignment: The Series 2 features our patented Lumbar-Flex Zoned Support. This is a key feature that distinguishes Back Science mattresses. It provides targeted support to the lower back, which is crucial for maintaining proper spinal alignment and preventing or alleviating back pain. This is something that may be particularly beneficial for you, given your history with other mattresses.
  • Pressure Relief: The Series 2 also incorporates Hypergel foam layers that provide excellent pressure relief for side sleepers. This can help to prevent the hip and shoulder pain that you mentioned.
  • Durability: We use high-quality materials and construction in our Back Science mattresses, which ensures that they hold up well over time. This addresses your concern about mattresses not lasting, and it’s a key difference from some of the experiences you’ve had.
  • Adaptability: The hybrid design of the Series 2 combines the support of pocketed coils with the comfort of foam layers. This offers a versatile feel that can accommodate both side and back sleeping, even for those who “flip-flop” throughout the night.

Regarding your concerns and the other options:

  • I understand your desire for a durable mattress. The construction of the Series 2 is designed to provide long-lasting support and resist sagging.
  • You mentioned the extra lumbar feature of the Back Science, and I want to emphasize that it will allow It’s designed to provide specific support to that area, which can be crucial for back health.
  • You have liked memory foam mattresses, but you have also liked the hotel sleep you had on the Serta Perfect Sleeper, so as a hybrid with our Hypergel system, you will be getting the perfect blend that has the feel somewhere in between, only with the highest level of support you need.

I encourage you to explore the Back Science Series 2 Hybrid mattress online at www.backscience.com to learn more about its features and benefits.
