Please Rate My DIY Build!

Hello,

I’m considering building my own mattress utilizing the below components. For reference, I am 5’10" 165 lbs, and a side sleeper. Please let me know what you think of the below build and if I should make any alterations.

Thanks, I appreciate your time!

  • [li]Caliber Edge 6" Pocket Coil by Leggett and Platt

  • 2" soft dunlop or talalay blend 19ILD. I will probably go with Dunlop since it is cheaper though
  • 3" 3.5lb density memory foam, which I will probably swap in the not too distant future for 3" soft Titanflex or Serenefoam topper as the 3.5lb density is already starting to lose its cushioning due to me not using a transition layer over the last year or so between it and the coil mattress I currently use.

Hi MrMattress.

Your DIY looks solid from a durability standpoint. I’d love to know why you chose memory foam as your comfort layer and latex as a transition layer. Is the current memory foam soft? Are you having any issues you need troubleshooting?

Ok. So I actually decided to swap to coils for polyfoam instead. A coil setup is likely to be unnecessarily firm, given my BMI. Its also cheaper.

And I have tried 3" soft Dunlop latex on top of coils, but found it to be too firm and not comfortable for side sleeping. I like the durability of latex and think it can serve as a suitable transition layer. Maybe a 19 or even 14 ild Talalay can serve as a suitable comfort layer, but I do not know anywhere I can try it and if it doesn’t work out it can be costly. 4lb density memory foam on the other hand has proven to work for me, although I do wish it didn’t get so hot at times.

Do you think it’s a bad idea to use latex as a transition layer?

If you like the feeling of memory foam but don’t like the heat then I would use a 3" layer of 19ILD (14 is too soft for your BMI) talalay on top first then decide if you need a transition layer below that as well.

I decided to go with a 2" 28 ILD Talalay as a transition layer and 3" of memory foam on top of the polyfoam base. Hopefully, it will work out.

Considering you are a side sleeper I think talalay for the support layer was a smart choice since it provides much better travel for the hip/shoulder areas.

Exactly my thinking. I may even decide to go with talalay as the comfort layer at some point, and put a 2-3" 19 ILD layer on top as well. We will see.
