Plushbeds

So I just got off the phone with John at Plushbeds who seemed to be a complete jerk to talk to. 1st he told me that my going to different latex mattress dealers over the past 2 weeks and testing out the mattresses and speaking to several knowledgeable dealers was a flawed system (why? because it wasnt him I was talking to). Then he informed me that if I gave my own specs for the bed, his company (if I were to buy his bed) would not stand by any refund or exchange I may later request. He claims he knows better than I do about my husband and my sleeping preferences based on his 15000 customer history. His attitude alone while talking to him ensured that I would never want to do business with his company and this is after my calling him yesterday and him promising to call me back in half an hour since I was driving and never returning my phone call. Yea guess I’ll be going with sleepez.

Hi nrich,

Thanks for sharing your experience with Plushbeds.

I certainly doesn’t sound like you had the “best” experience so say the least but this may also be somewhat of a blessing in disguise because even though they would be a “better than average” choice compared to most of the mainstream mattresses that the majority of consumers end up buying … for most of the members here they probably wouldn’t be the “best value” choice compared to many of the other options that are available to them.

I’m looking forward to finding out what you end up deciding … and of course any other comments or questions you may have along the way.

Wow. I had the exact same experience. While I was chatting with a representative (Samantha I think) they told me “we are the manufacturer so we can custom build the bed to your specifications” but then she told me to call a mattress specialist to to that. That’s when I got John on the phone. He gave me the same bit about not honoring the refund policy. When I pointed out to him that he should still honor the 100 day comfort/layer exchange (because what is the difference anyway?) he back peddled and said that yeah they would honor that part.

I also had very much the same exchange with him regarding my attempts to shop around. I told him how I had been to a few stores in my area so I could test out various ILDs and thicknesses. He asked how much time I had spent on any one mattress and I told him that I had spent 4 hours in one store in particular with at least 30 min on each mattress I tried. I was told that that was insufficient. I don’t know why. After all, I’m comparing apples to apples, dunlop to dunlop, talalay to talalay and ILD to ILD. I don’t know how else you could hope to get something that feels right to you from an online only retailer since there is no way to try THEIR mattresses out.

Sure, I get that they offer that 100 day exchange and all, but I don’t want to have to deal with that. I would want to try and get as close as possible the first time. I have no doubt that John knows more about mattresses than me but his dismissive attitude about my attempts to be an informed consumer were unwelcome.

I have not yet made my decision whether to buy from them or not. The price is frankly the best I’ve seen on an all natural latex bed, taking into account that they don’t charge shipping and they pay the sales tax for you, and I’ll usually take a good price on a quality product over a “nice guy” selling a similar product at a higher price. A local competing mattress manufacturer has twice now (two showrooms) been the most awesome mattress shopping experience I could imagine. However, this super nice guy, who’s family has been in the business for 30 years straight up told me that his talalay was organic and also that he knew the guy that owns OMI (Organicpedic) and that they use organic talalay too. Two statements that I know to be false. So even the nice guys can give you misinformation, well-intentioned or not.

Hi lumenbeing,

Thanks for sharing your experience with Plushbeds as well … I appreciate it.

If you look at some of the members that are listed here that also make and sell component latex mattresses you may find that Plushbeds isn’t the “best” value compared to some of the other options you have available to you.

Phoenix

Who would be a better value and why?

Hi Wrewster,

As I’ve mentioned on several occasions in my previous replies to you … I don’t make specific recommendations and only you can decide on the “value” of a mattress purchase relative to the other mattresses you are considering.

There is more about the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase in post #13 here that can help you make more meaningful comparisons between mattresses and which I have also linked in several of my previous replies to you.

From my reply in post #7 here …

Some of your questions are beginning to become somewhat redundant. I also deleted one of your posts in another topic which was off topic and a “suggestion” to someone that had already purchased a mattress (see the forum rules here)

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix, I am comparing Plush beds to one of the member brands listed called Spindle and also speaking with John at Plush beds. He points out that Spindle doesn’t allow a full refund at all once the mattress has been opened and that they will. Spindle automatically only allows you 40% of your money back. Although the Plush is a 1/3 more money there is simply much less risk involved don’t you agree?

Plush beds= $1,000 more than Spindle but less risky in regards to company policies

Spindle= potential $800-$1,000 savings(if you get a new layer later on) but more risky in that if you end up not agreeing with this mattress at all you are immediately out $1,100+
Decisions, decisions

This is a response I got from John at Plushbeds:

"Members of mattress underground must pay mattress underground to be on their site. I understand also they must also pay a % of any resulting sale.

We do not want to participate in recommendations based on financial gain for obvious reasons.

An impartial site would be

You do not present any verifiable facts about Spindle via mattress underground compared to Plushbeds other than price.

Without evidence all you are doing is comparing the shape of a mattress.

Bottom line is there are too many restrictions with Spindle:

  1. Exchange Fee $150 – Plushbeds $0.00

  2. Return Fee 60% penalty to you. Plushbeds $0.00

  3. If you don’t open the mattress, you pay to ship back. Typical Cost $300-400. Plushbeds $0

  4. No certifications to view. How can you trust what you are getting without certification?

Plushbeds http://www.plushbeds.com/assets/images/images_products/CU-watermark_03.jpg

  1. Mattresses are not Greenguard Certified. Plushbeds Certification Attached.

  2. Pillows and Sheets are included free of charge with plushbeds also.

I wish you good luck in your endeavor to achieve a good night’s sleep

Kind Regards,

John"

Hi Wrewster,

Your private message to me that included the same email response and which I asked you to post on the forum (I don’t normally reply to private messages or emails that would be more appropriate to post on the forum except for a request to repost the question on the forum … see post #2 here) also included your question …

… which I’ve already answered in my reply to you in post #17 here (and the link it included to post #4 here) and which also includes my comments that would apply to the rest of their email response to you as well including my comments about review sites such as Sleep Like The Dead. I would ask you to read my reply this time so you don’t keep on repeating the same questions.

I would also ask you to reread my reply and caution in post #6 earlier in this topic about repeating the same questions in multiple posts and topics that have already been answered and make sure you read the forum rules here.

As I mentioned in my previous reply to the same question … the guidelines and suggestions on the site are “self evident” and would apply to any manufacturer or retailer regardless of whether they are a member here or not and don’t require “believing” or “trusting recommendations” from anyone (including me) and I don’t make any specific recommendations for mattresses, materials, or manufacturers. The members here (and there were only about half a dozen when the site first started) are certainly not the only sources of good quality/value mattresses across the country or online and I would probably guess that more than 3/4 of the mattresses purchased as a result of the information on this site are probably from non members (including Plushbeds as you can see here and here and here). Membership here only recognizes quality and value that already exists and doesn’t suddenly change whether a manufacturer or retailer would be a good quality or value choice or whether they are a good “match” for someone based on all the parts of their personal value equation that are most important to them.

Some of their comments are also inaccurate or misleading.

Once again … post #13 here includes the most important parts of the “value” of a mattress purchase that can help you make more meaningful comparisons between mattresses regardless of which manufacturer or retailer you are considering or whether they are a member here or not.

Phoenix

Hi Phoenix, after reviewing what you sent about Post#13 I thought about it and thought that the Plushbeds is the way to go simply because they use quality materials without weak links, we can return it without a 40% penalty unlike Spindle ( even though they may very well be very very good) and the tipping point was the warranty Plushbeds offered us on the Reverie 8Qs. They worked in a 10 year in home service parts and labor warranty on the power adjustable bases. Because they seem to be a larger online retailer they offered what others don’t in regards to the complete package if you are looking to buy more than just a mattress. Most of our local retailers don’t offer a longer warranty than the Mfr. on power adjustable beds and although these may prove very reliable I’ll take the extra peace of mind just in case. Even the actual Mfrs. don’t offer longer protection as an option and the factory coverage is rather skimpy when spending $3,000 for split king bases. I also found it difficult to find many online retailers that offered better protection as an option. I hope we made the right move but if we don’t like the mattress at least we have 100 nights to try them out and they said they will take it back ( the mattresses, not the platforms) if we don’t like it. They also offer a free comfort exchange on the comfort layer where others charge $$$. I know that we could have gambled and saved a little bit more money with another brand of mattress perhaps but I wanted to buy everything from one place and keep it as simple as possible. I hope we made the right move and time will tell. I’ll keep you posted after we take initial delivery, and much further down the road to let you know how things are going with it. Thanks for all of your time and knowledge with this website Phoenix!!!

Hi Wrewster,

You were looking at some good options and made some good comparisons and if Plushbeds was the best “match” for you and compared well to your other finalists based on all the parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you then I think you did well and certainly made a good choice.

Congratulations on your new mattress :).

I’m looking forward to your comments and feedback when you’ve received it and had the chance to sleep on it for a bit.

Phoenix

Just got the news that our new Plushbeds mattress and Reverie 8Q will be delivered next week. I’ll be sure to post our comments of Time of delivery, 30, 60, 90 days, and 1 year every step of the way. Your input Phoenix has meant a lot to me!!

Hi Wrewster,

The time in between making a purchase and actually being able to sleep on a mattress can be one of the hardest parts of the process … but you don’t have long to wait now

Phoenix

Looking forward to the reviews. These guys were my 3rd choice. Oyasumi being my 2nd.

Only reason I didn’t go with these is that they weight over 100 pounds. I’m moving soon so I needed a mattress that I could easily move.

I went with the Royal Pedic Organic Cotton mattress which requires a Prescription. These are firm but it should be okay as I’ve been sleeping on 4 layers of comforter on the floor.

Hi incognito,

Congratulations on your new mattress

Did you buy the box spring as well (which would soften it up a little)?

You certainly made a high quality choice and I’m looking forward to your comments and feedback when you receive it.

Phoenix

Right, instead they tend towards misleading the consumer about safety certifications and not participating in any venue which would eat in to their profit margin even slightly. Fine. They are not outright lying, and it’s their right to abstain from participating here.

But if Phoenix is not impartial, then I simply don’t know what the word means. He never recommends a particular manufacturer. He never bad mouths a particular manufacturer. He stays incredibly objective to the point where at first, I wished he’d be more forthcoming with actual opinions rather than “merely” facts!!! That sounds backwards, doesn’t it!!!?? But he does not do it, and clearly otherwise there would be an obvious conflict of interest surfacing. There isn’t.

Oh and BTW, “financial gain” might be technically true, but a valuable service is being provided. Putting a modest price tag on a valuable service seems quite reasonable to me, and I much prefer the mattress companies themselves subsidizing it, rather than forum membership fees - which would be another way to do it… And besides, let’s be honest here… a handful of $200 membership fees and less than $50 per sale kickback (based on the honor system only apparently) is hardly paying the bills. Phoenix’s time alone is worth more than that.

So while PlushBeds - all in my opinion - offers a worthy product, it is also overpriced compared to similar alternatives, and they have a very effective, and in some cases misleading, website which probably draws in a lot of business. They also advertise heavily and are often the first listed in Google search results for “latex mattress”, and that probably also has something to do with their higher pricing as well.

Probably true, but the comparison shouldn’t have been limited to Plush vs Spindle.
