I recently purchased a 9 inch mattress from one of the trusted members of this site. It is a latex hybrid which consists of a 6 inch Bolsa QE and a 3 inch Talalay latex topper. It was shipped in a box. I have had the mattress unboxed now for 5 days and slept on it for 5 days. It feels great and I have no complaints about the feel of the mattress and how I sleep on it. The research I did on this site in particular helped me make a good choice after trying out a latex mattress in person. However, the coils are well short of the latex and they haven’t expanded to the size of the latex. I try to pull them out but it is difficult because it is inside a mattress cover and also has a latex layer on top . The manufacturer said I should be able to pull out the coils but it is not working, maybe because of the latex on top? He also said over time it will expand. I don’t want to have to take apart the mattress to fix this problem and at the same time I don’t like how the coils are well short of the latex on both sides of the longer part of the mattress (the coils are also short on the shorter sides of the mattress). Is it bad to continue to sleep on the mattress as it is? Is it possible that the coils took permanent damage in the packing and shipping process? (Given the entire mattress was vacuum sealed and compressed). And lastly, do you have any tips on how I could get the coils expand fully without having to disassemble the mattress?
Welcome to The Mattress Underground ! Thanks for your question.
Congrats on your new 9 " latex hybrid mattress ! Thanks for your purchase from one of the TMU trusted members and for your support of the program, they are a fine group of quality manufacturers. Good to hear that you are happy with the feel of the mattress and that you found the forum’s resources to be helpful for your research.
What you’re describing can happen occasionally with compressed pocketed coils in the roll-packed hybrid mattress. You may find expert trusted member Arizona Premium’s YouTube video “How to Decompress Hybrid Pocket Coil Spring System” helpful for understanding the process for decompressing the coils. With a person on each side of the mattress support layer, firmly grab the sides and give it a series of tugs, starting in the middle and working to the top, then back to the middle and working to the bottom. This method should return the mattress back to its correct size. BTW, what size mattress did you get? Hope this helps and let us know if it has decompressed fully already.
Thanks for your reply. It is a queen sized mattress that came in one piece and I did not have to assemble it. I did see that video and did attempt to pull it from the sides by myself, which did nothing. I then unzipped the mattress and took the latex out partially. I then spent a solid hour and a lot of energy using the method that Ken talks about in the video. It helped but the coils are still about 77 inches and 58 inches wide. It is noticeable. I really put a lot of energy into stretching out the coils. I was literally sweating trying to get it the right length but i couldn’t get more than 77 inches long and 58 and 1/2 wide. It is better than it was before but if I am sitting at the edge of the mattress the coils fall in and the latex kind of falls on top of the coils. I am not satisfied with it. Ken said it would come out in time but given how much energy I put into manually expanding the coils I am doubtful it will just expand to the right length. Do you think it would be better if I got someone to help? And maybe completely remove the latex? It was a pain in the ass and the latex seemed to be shedding a decent and I don’t want to ruin the integrity of the latex.
Thanks for giving the decompression video a try and sorry to hear that the process hasn’t helped thus far. Understood; attempting to decompress a queen size latex hybrid is quite a project for one person to undertake. Can someone help you take some pics that better illustrate the measurements you describe? We could then get those to Arizona Premium for further review of your issue.
That’s a great idea, dhaiman1; having someone to help you would ensure that the coils are distributed more evenly and correctly. If together you remove the latex, retry the coil decompression steps, measure the coil array, and take pics with a tape measure comparison, that would be the best way to understand where the problem lies. Any other updates since your last post?
I took your suggestion and removed the latex from the mattress with the help of my doorman. We then pulled at each end of the coils pretty vigorously, moving from left to right. Unfortunately the coils did not expand any further than what I had previously gotten them to. I took pictures and sent them to Ken. The length of the coils is 76.5 inches, so 3.5inches short, and I got this with a tape measure. I took a video as well so it can clearly be seen. I wrote to Ken about this and he said he would have to take it up with Leggatt and Platt. After all the research I did I was excited to finally get the mattress. Suffice to say I am pretty underwhelmed with how it has played out. It would seem to make sense to me that a logical conclusion would be that the pocket coil unit may have shrunk in size during the packing and compressing process.

Excellent research work on your coil concerns, dhaiman1 ! Kudos to your doorman for stepping us and helping you attempt further decompression of the coil unit, as well as getting visual documentation for the L&P conversation. The tape measuring and video are both nice touches and will be helpful for further inspection of your findings. Ken will help you every step of the way towards resolution of your unusual situation, he is extremely customer-centric and knows his components well. Leggett & Platt should have interest in your findings too, as they pride themselves on the rigorous testing and high quality standards of their products. These pocket coil units undergo multiple checks throughout the manufacturing and assembly process, it will be interesting to learn L&P’s findings in your case. Keep us updated when you can and thanks.
Thanks for your reply. I’m really not sure what the big mystery here is (that there seems to be this need for an investigation on their end). Is it that surprising that compressing a queen sized mattress (with metal coils in it) into a small box and shipping it across the country would result in those metal coils being altered? I mean these are metal coils that are supposed to be very flexible as well. It doesn’t seem at all out of the realm of possibility that these coils just took some damage during the compressing and shipping process that resulted in a alteration of the metal coils by a few inches.
I am not sure about this but I will let things play out.
On another note. I got a soft configuration with this setup, 6 inches of coil and 3 inches of soft talalay. My shoulders still don’t seem to be sinking in to make me comfortable enough sleeping on my side. And my spine feels weird when I wake up in the morning. Do you think it will soften up over a few months? I also bought a st. dormier protector because I sleep very hot. I hope this doesn’t firm up the mattress too much, I did just put it on and it’s hard to even tell if its at all firmer with this protector as it seems pretty thin.
From the April 29th date of your first post, you are closing in on the first 30 days of your new mattress; often times, your body will need a 30-45 day “sleep adjustment” period (sometimes a longer time for others) to adapt to a new mattress’s support and comfort feel. Is it possible to set the timer on your phone and take a few pics while in your side sleeping position to better view your shoulders and spine slign on the mattress? Several standard questions we usually ask earlier on but didn’t apply to your initial post are: what is your height, weight, and preferred sleeping position(s)? What type mattress did you have before and how old was it? It would be helpful to know some details regarding your previous sleep history before commenting further on your current setup.
With your combination of coils, Talalay latex topper, and wool mattress protector, you should have a nice, well air-circulated, cool-sleeping bed. The protector should not “firm up” the mattress as its 16 inch pockets fit up to a 12 inch mattress and yours is 9 inches. Ideally, a protector shouldn’t be too thick, as that is added material separating you from the conforming feel of the Talalay comfort layer. Are there any new developments since your last post?
Ken got back to me (after I followed up with him). He gave me two options after checking his other coils saying that the numbers matched up. He said he could send me a firm piece of latex to put in the empty space of the coils and said this would be a perfect replacement. I’m not crazy about this solution because it still leaves me with a defective pocket coil unit which is short for some reason and no one knows why. He said he could ship me another coil but that I would have to ship my coil to leggat and platt. Which I guess implies he wants me to roll and vacuum seal the coils and ship the coil? I definitely don’t want to deal with the work of doing that, especially because this issue is 0% my fault. I had a friend come over today to measure the exact coil length and we were able to stretch out the coil to about 79 inches but then it went back to 77. When the latex topper was off the coils I was able to just push the coils to 72 inches with very little force, I was just testing it to see how easily it would collapse, is this normal? I’m getting frustrated with this situation I feel like a replacement coil is just what should be done.
In response to your other questions, I am 6’1 175 pounds and primarily a side sleeper although I do twist and turn in bed but I definitely prefer being on my side, particularly my left side. But I have noticed even with this new mattress I continue to get shoulder pain. Perhaps I need something even softer, maybe a supersoft topper. But all of that I want to explore after we get the defective mattress straightened out. I am tired of opening and trying to adjust this mattress I really shouldn’t have to manually try to expand the coils (like 5 times now) to get it the right length).
Would be nice to get some others opinions as well, but I guess there aren’t too many experts that chime in here…
I do sleep with a cheap (probably made with synthetic polyester fibers) body pillow, he definitely helps keep me aligned when I’m on my side and it is very comfortable but perhaps this is one reason I am overheating. I really struggle if I try to get comfortable on my side without a body pillow (pretty much impossible). I was doing some research and I did find they do make shredded memory foam body pillows but I am afraid this would overheat me as well. Do you think a wool body pillow would keep me cool? I see that several companies make them (quite expensive though) and I would be willing to shell out the cash if it keeps me cool.
Pillows can warm up your sleep environment, as well some linens and other bedding accessories can for those who are heat-sensitive. A shredded body pillow would circulate air more freely; perhaps consider a latex shred or wool/ latex shredded pillow for optimal temperature regulation. You may want to check with TMU trusted member DIY Natural Bedding, they offer customizable pillowsthat utilize a variety of natural materials, including both organic latex and wool and would be happy to help you decide what would blend would best suit your body pillow needs .
Hey Sensei, did you see my previous reply about the coil issue? What do you think about the issue ? To me it seems obvious there is a defect that shouldn’t just be solved by putting a piece of latex in the empty space
dhaiman1, I know this is an old post but I was wondering how things turned out with the coils.
I’m in the same boat. The first 2 nights I didn’t get any sleep. I just felt unbalanced having the latex topper drape over the sides of the coils. After the 2nd sleepless night, I took it apart, took it off the platform, shook it out and stretched the best I could. Still the length of the coils was only 76 inches while the topper was exactly 80.
I let it sit for a couple more hours without the cover and topper, then came to it and shook it as much as I could, just like in the YouTube video, until I got it to 79 inches. Almost threw out my back. I also made a few tears in the thin sheet that covers the coils, so I won’t be doing that again.
I thought it was good enough at 79", so I put the latex topper back on, inadvertently made a few tears in the foam, and zipped it up in the bamboo cover. I’m not sure if it compressed a few inches again, but it still just doesn’t feel right.
It’s so frustrating not having the coils matched up evenly with the topper. At the foot and head of the mattress, you can still feel the topper much further out than the coils underneath. No way to sit down at the foot of the bed, not that I’d be doing that every day, but for the cost of the mattress it’s definitely not to my liking.
I want to be able to sit comfortably at the end of the bed while I work the remote or put on my socks. I can’t do that with this mattress, I just fall right off. There has to be a way to get the coiled bottom half to expand all the way, but at the same time I don’t want to put any more tears in the mattress. Well, hope you’ve found had some improvement with yours.
