I slept on my new 15.5 8" quadcoil last night for the first time with my 3" Talalay topper. I will give it some time, but it felt uncomfortably firm on my shoulders and hips when on my side. Did anyone experience this same thing at first? If it remains this way, any suggestions for making it softer? Add another layer? Thanks.
That’s pretty common with a new setup. The coils and even the latex topper can take a little time to settle, and your body may need a week or two to adjust as well.
If you’re still feeling too much pressure on your shoulders and hips after a couple of weeks, I’d look at the comfort layer before changing the mattress itself. A softer topper (or swapping to a softer Talalay if yours is medium or firm) is usually a better first step than just adding more thickness. Another inch can help, but firmness tends to matter more than total height.
Out of curiosity, what ILD is your 3" Talalay topper, and what’s your height and weight? That can make a big difference in how the setup feels.
A couple of things could be going on here. The top layer definitely can affect it and you might need to go softer but there’s that point of diminishing returns where if you go too soft, you’ll go through it and you’ll feel those coils much more than it will feel firmer.
We’ve experienced that with an extra soft Talalay. Depending on the size of the individual an extra soft Talalay can actually feel firmer than a medium Talalay because the person is going right through it.
Also which Texas pocket coil unit did you get? If you got the 1080 then that would definitely feel firmer. Yes as Maverick recommended, there is definitely an adjustment period for the mattress first but also your body adjusting to it. I would definitely give it a few weeks to really see if it is a good fit for you .
What’s your height and weight?
I’m late to the party here, and it looks like MM and Maverick have responded with good insight.
This is redundant, but :
- What is your weight and height?
- Is the 3" latex soft, medium, or firm?
- If you lay directly on the springs, how does that feel? Do you have the pressure relief you are looking for?
Thanks for the reply. I don’t know the specifics on my topper. It’s made by Sleep by latex and I believe it was a medium firmness. I’m 5’11" and 175 lbs. I have a 2" Tempurpedic topper that I tried on top of the latex last night and it definitely relieved some of the pressure.
A medium layer of latex can be too firm. I was 215lbs at 6’0 and it was too firm for me on a setup with 3" quadmini on top of 8" 14.75g springs. With just a layer of latex on top I’d usually say to use soft. What you can do is try that memory foam both on top and underneath the latex and both should be better than just the latex by itself. If you place it under the latex it settles down the responsiveness a lot and gives you more contouring. I don’t think the 15.5g spring on its own is too firm for you, but a medium latex in practice feels firm in comparison to standard poly foam or memory foam beds.
Are you a side sleeper? What’s your weight? Is Talalay soft/medium/firm?
Yes, I tend to agree that the medium latex may be restricting pressure relief. So, if you try lying directly on the 8" and 3" springs, how does it feel? Soft latex, or perhaps your 2" topper, may do the trick.
On my diy bed I use a top layer of latex/memory hybrid foam.
Thanks for your reply. Laying on the springs feels fine, but I’m obviously not doing that for 8 hours. I’ve noticed that there is some discomfort in both of my hips during the day now, even after adding the tempurpedic topper. Not sure if that’s just my body adjusting. If I were to consider a soft latex, what would you suggest i.e. thickness? Thanks.
Thanks for the info - much appreciated!
