Config 1 was the most comfortable for me, but I found both lacks mid-section support (I’m 5’9" 205, stocky). I tried config 2 w/ the firm/soft latex and even tried putting a ‘cushion saver’ between the latex and pocket coil in the center with no luck to increase support. (cushion saver - Amazon.com)
Any suggestions on how I could add zoning outside of going to the combizone? I see that Sealy seems to add a firmer foam in the center 1/3 of some of their posturpedic mattresses. FWIW, I went to the local casper store on a whim and their wave hybrid felt excellent (just not their bonkers price).
For anyone else reading this and considering covers - don’t go with a bottom zipper mattress cover - it is a total pain in the butt to adjust layers.
Welcome back to the TMU Forum ! Thanks for your question.
Congrats on your new DIY mattress journey ! Thanks for your kind words on the site and for including some of your personal stats talisman311, as those are helpful for better understanding what materials, components and layering arrangements are most suitable for your personal preferences. Just curious as you don’t say but what sleep position(s) do you use? Different sleeping positions are part of what determines how deep a cradle you need and how thick the comfort layer should be. This in turn affects the type of support layers that will be appropriate. The layers underneath this comfort layer can help with pressure relief for those who change positions and with thinner upper layers or can be primarily focused on preventing you from preventing your heavier parts from sinking down too far with thicker comfort layers.
Thanks for including the product link to the Seat Saver as a quick reference to your DIY center support remedy. Underneath 4 " of latex, you probably aren’t able to feel the vinyl covered particle board reinforcement as a support mechanism. A solid layer directly over the coils would also impact how they interact with your body’s weight as the individual coil’s response is being blocked by the flat surface of the seat saver. Some more questions for you: what size mattress is your setup and what are you using for a foundation? Also, are you working directly with the manufacturer who is supplying your layers and have they offered support suggestions regarding their component recommendations?
Lol, sorry to hear that you find the bottom zippered cover “a total pain in the butt to adjust layers” as those are fairly common and sadly part of the DIY experience Thanks for sharing your DIY research and looking forward to hearing more on your progress.
