My husband and I have slept on a Posturepedic Spring Free Rivercrest latex mattress for 8 years. It has gotten too soft. We need some support layers but love the plushness of the latex. What current mattresses do you recommend that we look at to start our mattress shopping journey? I am 125 lbs and he is 180 lbs. I am a side/ back sleeper and he is side/ stomach sleeper.
If you have gotten good luck with latex I would recommend not fixing what isn’t broken. Sometimes latex mattresses will last quite a bit beyond 8 years although I suspect that there are quilting foam layers in the Sealy mattress that are not latex and are likely disproportionately contributing to the degree of softening that you are experiencing. I am curious if there is law label on the mattress that shows what upholstery materials are used in the mattress as that can tell a lot.
Generally for side sleepers you don’t want a mattress that is too firm, although if the softening is caused by some polyfoam over the latex core than its possible the issue is really just more support related than simply being too soft. All latex mattresses, particularly Talalay latex are so elastic it is unlikely at your weight that they will not be supportive enough even if made a little bit softer. The weight of you two is difficult to take into account without height but realistically you can both do just fine on a medium-soft latex mattress. You could also consider hybrid pocket coil and latex for other good quality options.
Hard to get more specific than this without knowing where you are located.
Thanks for the reply! We are located in Western NC. Husband is 6 feet tall, BMI 25. I’m 5’7", BMI 20.
All suggestions and information appreciated!
Hello Ellen,
Yes you can both definitely be on softer latex mattresses IMO without any significant loss of support. I do recommend Talalay over dunlop for its enhanced elasticity and pressure relief.
I am not sure who to suggest in your area as I am based in Alberta, but I would check the recommended list from TMU for anyone close to you:
I do know that our number one brand we sell Berkeley Ergonomics has a dealer in Raleigh; the great additional benefit with these guys is that their slat support system is adjustable giving additional control over your comfort and support.
