Hi,
I have an odd question. Our house was filled with phosphate dry powder extinguisher during a small chimney fire (many fire extinguishers were used). The powder stayed in the air and it makes me quite sick (seizures, asthma, etc.). I have a lovely 3" latex topper and I was wondering after reading about the manufacture of latex if it would be possible to soak/wash the powder out of the topper? I have tried to use the topper out of the home and had the same reactions I have in the house while using it. I wouldn’t normally do this, but insurance is not helping and I need to use it to sleep on as we rent another house while we fight about the one we can’t live in. I thought the people on this forum might have a better understanding of the structure of the foam and if it would always hold onto things/dust, or if it could be washed and air dried. I know they use a latex type sponge to clean soot/dust???
Thanks!
Hi Ouchyinthemorning,
Thank you for the detailed information regarding your situation.
In our experience with latex, if a customers has water spilled on their latex, we recommend using towels or rags to help suck up the excess liquid. However, if it’s anything other than water (urine, vomit, etc. to name a few common instances), it seems to linger, it’s hard to fully clean the layer, and we recommend replacing it. In your case with the phosphate dry powder, we would definitely recommend to replace it.
Hope that helps. Please let me know if you have any further questions!

Okay. It was worth a try. Thanks!
Hi Ouchyinthemorning,
You are welcome! You can also refer to the link here that describes the sanitizing process in a bit more detail in case you’re interested in taking that route.
