Pre-purchase Sanity Check

Hey all,

New member. Just spent the past few days consuming all your info before registering.

I live in Toronto. This will be my first time purchasing a “proper” mattress, and I’m a Buy It For Life type of person, so I’m committing to a nice Dunlop latex.

I’m a bit of a mover with a tendency towards side sleeping. Been living on my firm Ikea mattress the past couple years and my body is a collection of churning stones now, particularly in neck and back.

I’m 6 foot, male, and average around 200lbs (+/- 20lbs). Wide shoulders, fairly wide hips and big old ass.

From my readings, I’m pretty sure I just need the MFC Presto, no?

Firm support with a customisable gradient. I think the 10" would suit me better than the 8". I could reasonably go for the 10" Unison, but I think the price difference is negligible for the lack of customisation and better pillows

What I should have done on my current mattress is pop on a 3" latex/wool cover, I think. I haven’t tested such a thing, but my gut is telling me I want a soft top the sink into but a fairly firm middle to stop my spine from collapsing or my shoulders/pelvis from sinking down too deep.

What rookie mistake have I made in this? What haven’t I considered?

Edit; oh, I also tend to sleep with a 20lb weighted blanket over a light goose down duvet, so my actually bed-weight may vary by an additional 20lbs!

Hey Quin,

Welcome to TMU’s forum  ! Thanks for your question, and my apologies for the delayed response.

Congrats on your new mattress shopping adventure  ! As you say that this will be your “first proper mattress” purchase, what size are you planning to buy and what is your budget?

Thanks for including your sleep history and personal stats, Quin. With your somewhat higher BMI and active sleep style, it could be that your firm Ikea mattress has seen better days at this point, especially if your body is developing pressure point pain on the mattress. You are right; it is time to move on, so to speak, to better sleep  .

Thanks for considering a possible purchase from expert trusted member MFC  ! The Presto Customizable Organic Latex Mattress does seem a good fit for your needs, and the rearrangeable/ replaceable layers would help you not only adjust comfort, but also come closer to a “Buy it for Life” mattress. As far as the choice between 8" and 10" thickness, that is more of a personal preference. A 10" mattress would provide a bit more comfort material and perhaps a little longer use, given your somewhat higher BMI.

Are you referring to a 3" latex/ wool topper? If your current Ikea mattress is having support issues, adding a topper would not improve the mattress’s support, but rather add more comfort to the feel of the mattress.

So far, you seem to be doing a good job with your due diligence and initial research, Quin. If you haven’t done so already, consider a review of Phoenix’s “The Basic Functions of a Mattress” and “Mattress Specifications You Need to Know”, both articles will provide basic background to help with mattress manufacturer conversations.

Good to know! Do you find that the combination of a weighted blanket and light goose down duvet adds any heat to your mattress setup? Have you made any store visits and tried any mattresses? Let us know your decision and good luck shopping!
