We bought a Sleep EZ split king Talalay last year. The process of picking a mattress was horrible and I have PSTD from it. Ultimately, I really like our Sleep EZ but after trying 20 different layering options and sending back switches TWICE my husband really is not convinced. He is 6’7" and 250lbs and I’m regular sized and while he sleeps ok if its just him, when we cuddle in the middle (which is usual), there is a decent amount of dipping and he doesnt sleep well and its also less comfortable for me but not as bad. Sleeping alone is great, except for the marriage! For the record we are from bottom up, XFirm, Med, XFirm, Soft. Ironically same set up on both sides.
We hate the foam tops on intersprings because they all disfigure. What we grew up with was bare bones firm pocketed coils that we flipped. Two of our kids have these beds from his uncle who used to make mattresses and has since retired. They have 2-3 inch toppers on them and its ok. My husband wants to do this for the next kid as well (except for a queen size) - so we semi agreed to do the firm interspring with no padding then a 3 inch sleep ez latex topper. Except we cant find any intersprings that dont have foam (disfigure risk?) or arent junk. And I am not looking to pay a million dollars for this set up but I dont think I can convince my husband to do an all latex becuase he has secret ambitions of going to sleep on a firm interspring those nights he feels the latex is too mushy. Presently, he sleeps on the floor 1-2x a month when he gets annoyed.
So, I am looking for a good interspring to put as a foundation to a latex topper. I am outside DC in Virginia but I have little to no hope of store shopping based on last years experience.
This is what worked for me. I bought an extra firm coil mattress and latex toppers, with the intention of replacing the toppers when necessary.
In 2014 I bought a two-sided. Therapedic Medicoil Extra Firm mattress. This mattress has minimal padding (on both sides) and 12.5 gauge heavy duty coils. It was, I believe, designed and suitable for heavier individuals. It was uncomfortably firm/hard for me (185, 6-1). (Note: I don’t know if this mattress is still available.)
I experimented with topper thicknesses and firmness. What worked (for my wife and me), was, and is, a 2" medium topper on the mattress and a 3" soft topper at the upper surface. Both toppers were purchased from Sleep on Latex. No covers are used on the individual toppers – just a thin mattress pad and the bottom sheet.
I flip the toppers and mattress once or twice a year.
I’m using Dreamfoam Bedding’s Dream 9-Inch Two-Sided Medium Firm Pocketed Coil Mattress for the base under two pieces of foam. The foam they use in the cover really isn’t enough to ever pose a problem under the 5" of foam comfort layers. I think it might be just what you’re looking for, it’s flipable and more firm than medium. It’s available on Amazon, so you can read the reviews there and ask questions too. Lastly, they’re a great company. I buy my latex from them as well.
Hi AH673, do you still have the Sleep EZ mattress? If so, would you mind calling our office to discuss the mattress in detail? I’d like to pull up the order, look at the layer exchanges, and really just discuss it in detail to see what we can do to get the mattress dialed in. We can be reached at 480-966-9282.
Just to follow up on this thread, my husband spoke with someone at Sleep EZ and I think the biggest obstacle we had was the thick mattress cover. I’m not sure why we had that but we unzipped it and are now sleeping direct on the latex with just a sheet. Its night and day different. However, I think we need to do something more official than a half zipped up bed so have to figure that out. But if anyone is reading this and having trouble with their latex bed, I would recommend trying to take off the cover if you have a thick one.
I just wanted to say thanks for following up with the forum and letting us know about Sleep EZ and your latex mattress adjustments. It never ceases to amaze me how much different a mattress feels with the cover unzipped or removed.
Hi, I’m looking for an old fashioned mattress like they did in the 80’s or the most similar in Vancouver Region Canada. Please let me know the model and shops, thank you.
I am a back and side sleeper and after my second pregnancy my joints hypermobility got out of control.
Only those old mattress seems to let me sleep painless as I have tried one again recently, sadly I can’t bring it home.
Every time I get into a store I just pick the most firm and the mattress is fine for a few days/weeks, then my head and spine seem to sink more then my shoulder and my hyp sink too much and I get lower back pain. So basically as soon as the mattress is not perfectly equal even if it is a quarter of an inch or as soon as some of the springs get more loose, meaning we don’t even see a difference but someone sensitive could feel it, then I get pain.
This type of old style mattress that I am looking for are impossible to tell where the people have sleep on it.
While they are make good mattress now that you don’t see the imprint, they are all too soft for me or the springs will get loose with time at one spot, like if I sleep on my side, then I wont be able to sleep on my back at the same place.
I have turned around my mattress that I am not suppose too (only one sided) and while with not topper it is very firm you can steel feel that it curve in the middle where my back and hip layed. So the foam top is a problem but also the springs.

It seems you are interested in a more “traditional” 2-sided mattress design. Of the mattresses that you have had in the past, what brands did you like and were there any special natural materials (cotton, wool, horsehair, etc.) involved? Also, what size mattress are you replacing? Looking forward to hearing more on your mattress shopping journey.
