So I’m at University in the UK and I’m looking for a new single mattress. Possibly something I can dispose of after one year so it will have to be cheap, under £100.
I can’t find any mattress shops within a reasonable walking distance so I’ll have to order online but most don’t disclose specifics like density/layers etc, I know I can’t test them and returning will be hard.
Does anyone know of a go-to reliable online seller? Something that won’t deform after a year?
I sleep both on my side and back, 5’6 and 70KGs. I’m guessing something medium-firm.
The forum is focused primarily on the American and Canadian markets and unfortunately I have little specific knowledge about the UK market but I can make a few very general suggestions that may be helpful.
Hopefully some of the members here that are from the UK will also see your post and be able to share any comments or suggestions that they may have as well.
It may be difficult to find a mattress in your budget range that uses reasonable quality materials but if you are only looking for a mattress to use for a year then the quality and durability of the materials would be much less important anyway because even mattresses that use low quality materials would probably last for that long assuming that they are a good “match” for you in terms of comfort, firmness, and PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and your own Personal preferences) and aren’t “on the edge” of being too soft when you first purchase it.
Since the quality and durability of the materials in a mattress aren’t as important for such a short term … it may be worthwhile just calling some local stores to see if they have any mattresses in your budget range that you would be interested in testing and then visiting the ones that sound promising to test some of their mattresses in person so you can choose the one that is the best “fit” for you in terms of comfort, firmness, and PPP based on your own personal experience…
There may also be some good online options in your budget range on Amazon or other online sources but an online purchase may be somewhat risky unless they have a free return policy because you can’t test it in person before a purchase and if it’s not a good match for you and you don’t sleep well on it then there may be costs involved in returning it and starting all over again which could reduce your budget even further for the next mattress you try.
There may also be a local store that sells futons which are often in a lower budget range and if a futon is a good match for you then it could also make a reasonable choice.
It may also be worthwhile going to a local foam shop and buying one or more layers of polyfoam and a cover that fits them to make your own mattress which may also give you some additional options in a lower budget range.
