First post here. We bought a mattress 3.5 years ago from Natural Sleep Store in Denver. It was listed on the invoice as “Freeform Pocket Coil Organic Mattress”. As far as I remember, it was made by someone using Savvy parts. King size, medium pocket coils on both sides, topped by 3” Dunlop latex, medium on my side, soft on my wife’s side. Forward to the present–My wife’s side was feeling too soft and funky, we looked at it and the latex is fairly chewed up on her side. Visited Natural Sleep Store, they have a new owner, he did some research after I told him it was a Savvy, and said it appears that your mattress was “white labeled from a company that no longer exists”.
Anyway, I am preparing to replace the damaged soft Dunlop with a 3” medium Dunlop for her side. I have 2 questions.
Question one–I am a unsure how long this mattress will last–it seems like it should still have some years left, but not very confident after this. Am I just throwing good money after bad?
Question two–we added a fairly thin Parachute down substitute topper soon after purchasing, because we both feeling like we needed some cushioning. We feel like improving that cushioning now and am considering a 3” wool topper, either from Shepherd’s Dream (looks great, pretty expensive) or Savvy–more affordable, but not as much to read about it, not sure if it is as well made. If we do need to move on from this mattress sooner rather than later, any downside to having a good wool topper to use on whatever we choose next? Does a topper as a separate unit have any downside?
Open up your mattress to make sure your coils are good. SOL Dunlop 3” twin XL topper is about $229. Talalay 3” twin XL from mattresstopper is $270. If your coils are good, this is the best option.
Sonomawoolcompany is another option if you are looking for a wool topper. They are a bit cheaper compared to Shepards Dream.

Thanks for that lead megatonoleo–now I have 3 wool topper options. How much does the weight of the wool matter in these toppers? kind of wildly different, from 12.75 pounds up to 22 pounds, with Shepherd’s Dream in the middle, weightwise at 17 pounds, but the most expensive option. What other factors should I be looking at?
Sonomawool has limited options; they put more wool for the same price. Their toppers are 2” thick with more wool. Shepards Dream snuggle mate is 3” thick, so it compresses more.
Thickness, lbs of wool, quality–these are some factors I look into.
I just bought my all-latex bed, but my understanding is that I should have a decade+ of use from it, especially if I swap out any damaged/seriously worn layers along the way. I’d HOPE that your 3.5 year old mattress has lots more life left in it!
You probably also want to know how thick the topper is, so you basically can figure out the density. A 2” topper with 6lbs of wool will be much less stuffed than a 2” topper with 12lbs, making the heavier one arguably firmer simply because there’s more wool packed into that space.
I don’t know where you’re at - if you happen to be in/around NJ, Orange Mattress in Clark makes a wool topper in two different weights. You can drop into their showroom and try them out. I just picked mine up today, and can’t wait to sleep on it!
I also gave serious thought to Frankenmuth Woolen Mill’s wool topper. I’ve heard really good things.
I’ll be layering my new wool topper on top of my Avocado Eco plush Talalay latex topper. Three inches of lovely, soft Talalay latex that cushions my curves just right. That’s sitting directly on my mattress, which has a top layer of medium Talalay and was a touch too firm for me as a curvy side sleeper. For me, I don’t think the wool topper alone would bring enough softness, but the soft Talalay latex is wonderful. Might be worth considering a Talalay topper, or as a layer for inside your wife’s side of the mattress as well?
Not sure if this is relevant but it might be what you are experiencing.
