Hi there, I’m thinking about ordering a sleeping organic latex mattress. Was reading your tutorials and was wondering whether it is advisable to jump from a firm Dunlop to a soft talalay layer? I like the support of a extra-firm Dunlop, firm Dunlop, medium Dunlop I had tried in a store, but it was still a little too hard for me as a bony side sleeper. Can going soft talalay achieve the plush feel without sacrificing the support? Or will we feel the firm Dunlop underneath without a transition layer? Thanks for a great site!
Hi Bryan,
Welcome to the Mattress Forum!
I’m sorry for the delay in my reply to you, but you somehow posted to a part of the forum that was a prototype section and not an area that was monitored for posts.
This is an excellent question. Sometimes having a very plush layer in the uppermost layer of a mattress can actually make a mattress to feel “harder”, as you can “feel through” a layer that is too plush and then feel the “hardness” of a layer beneath it. Mattress manufacturers generally try to recommend designs that transition gradually or seamlessly from one layer to the other, with the “compressed” ILD of the layer above gently transitioning and closely matching the “beginning ILD” of the layer beneath.
With the Sleeping Organic design, you’d want to consult with them as to their suggestions, and you’d want to forward as much information as possible to them about the type (Dunlop), blend and ILDs of the layers you tested in person. Their configuration from the bottom up for what you specified would be (all 100% NR latex) an Extra-Firm Dunlop D 95-100 (45+ ILD), then a Firm Dunlop D 90 (36-40 ILD), then a Medium Dunlop D 80 (26-32 ILD). The next “softest” layer they would offer for your uppermost layer would be their Soft Dunlop D 70 (18-22) ILD. After that, you could choose a Talalay layer (all 100% NR latex) of Soft at a 19-23 ILD range, or an Extra-Soft at a 14-18 ILD range.
All of the layers of a mattress work together to provide your overall comfort, but I would also share your concern of the potential for the transition to be a bit “abrupt” if you chose the Extra Soft Talalay as your uppermost layer in this configuration.
As you may already be aware, Sleeping Organic is a member of this site which means that I think very highly of them and that I believe that they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of their quality, value, service, knowledge, and transparency. They are extremely knowledgeable about latex and different configurations, and I would not hesitate to phone them with your proposed configuration ideas and gather their recommendation.
I hope my reply is still relevant to your search - sorry again for the delay.
