Pulling the trigger

After my wife and I became fed up with sleeping on an expensive bag of bricks for the last 10 years, we’re pulling the trigger on a whole new bed set.

I have decided to go with partial latex on an adjustable base. After doing a lot of research and reading reviews here. This is what I have decided on.

Leggette and Pratt Prodigy split king base.
2- Ultimate Dreams Eurotop Latex twin xl Mattress’

I will share our opinion with everyone as we use them. We are looking forward to actually sleeping again.

Thanks to everyone for sharing thier info, it has been very helpful to read them during our search.

Hi kinsar,

Congratulations on your new “sleeping system”

You made some good choices and I’m looking forward to your feedback when you receive it.

Phoenix

Thanks Phoenix.

I really appreciate this site. I has been a tremendous help. Everything should be here around the end of the week. Since we are moving up from a queen size bag of bricks to a split king, we are replacing everything from the sheets on down. I’ll post about our experience as it unfolds.

The Leggett and Platt Prodigy split king base came in on Thursday, so I can give an update to the new bed system.

First, the base
Leggett and Platt Prodigy split king base. I found it on Ebay and made an offer. I believe I bought it at a great price!

It arrived on Thursday (freight) and they were heavy (two twinXL’s = split king) about 300 pounds total. Getting them into the room was a little work, but it took less than 10 minutes each to set them up. Just take the top off the box, remove one smaller box of accessories and paperwork, screw on legs, pop in casters, install batteries in remote and base box, turn over frame, plug it in and Viola’.

It seems to be very well built and very quiet. We have wood floors, so it is a bit noisier than it would be on carpet. I am going to get caster cups with an insulator bottom so it will quiet the vibration transferred to the wood floor.
Everything on it works great! OMG! The massage is wonderful! And the head and feet raised to the zero gravity position, really does seem to take a lot of pressure off the back and joints.

Second the Mattresses:
The mattresses are the Ultimate Dreams Eurotop Latex Mattresses from Dreamfoam Bedding. We decided to go with the number 6 on the top layer of latex (medium).

They have a bamboo covering with a zippered top layer 3" so you can replace the top layer if it is too soft or firm. Dreamfoam Bedding allows one exchange at a cost of $50. You initially pay $100 dollars and they send you the new top layer, once you send back the other layer, they refund you $50, they pay shipping both ways.

Chuck, at Dreamfoam Bedding is very responsive to customers.

The mattresses came in two boxes, not too big or heavy. You just open the box and the mattress is vacuum packed in a roll with a plastic sheet wrapped around it. You set it on the base, grab the plastic and unroll it. At this point the mattress is layed out, but still flat and vacuum packed in a sealed plastic bag. Place it how you want it to lay on the base. (With this step I recommend scissors, not a knife, you do not want to slice open the mattress cover by mistake). The plastic bag that the mattress is vacuum packed in extends beyond the foot of the mattress and you can pull it to make sure you are clear of the mattress and will not cut into it. Use the scissors to cut the end off of the bag (do it quickly, because the mattress will expand very fast) also cut the side of the bag open and pull it out from around the mattress. That is it.

The first night’s sleep: The mattresses were very comfortable, but honestly neither my wife or I sleep much the first night, but in the morning, both of us were amazed at home little our bodies hurt (unlike the past 10 years on the bag of bricks).

I know it doesn’t make much sense that we could hardly sleep on the mattresses, but felt great in the morning. Here is my reasoning for the incongruity. Our bodies had become so accustomed to the awful old mattress that we had been sleeping on; that it was actually somewhat of a shock to our bodies to be on comfortable mattresses and we could not sleep well that night. However, the mattresses were comfortable and very supportive so we barely hurt in the morning.

Second night’s sleep: We both slept very well last night and my wife woke up and was amazed that she was almost completely pain free for the 1st time in years! I too was almost pain free (from sleep). I want to make this perfectly clear, I am not saying these mattresses will magically cure your ache and pains. I am referring to the pain inflicted every night from sleeping on a bad mattress, which has vanished.

We will continue to sleep on these mattresses for a week or two, before we decide if we need to swap out the top layer for a softer feel or not, but so far, so good. I will continue to update as we progress.

Hi kinsar,

Thanks for taking the time to write such great feedback.

While of course there is always an adjustment period to any new sleeping surface … it seems to me that you made some very good choices and that your bodies are thanking you right from day 1
