I am hoping to get some assistance on purchasing a new mattress. My wife and I are both side sleepers for the most part (I toss and turn). My weight is 215 pounds and my wife is 180. We currently sleep on a loom and leaf (memory foam) purchased in 2017. It no longer has support. We are looking for a mattress that will meet these requirements: Has very little motion transfer, provides great pressure relief for lower back, hips, and shoulders, and we both like the contouring feel from the memory foam. We live outside the Chicago area. What would you recommend for us to consider?
Hello Johnmsu.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum ![]()
Since you both liked the slow, contouring “hug” of memory foam and want very low motion transfer with solid pressure relief at the hips/shoulders/lower back, here’s how I’d focus your search:
What to look for
- Comfort layer: 2–4" total of higher-density memory foam (aim for 4–5 lb/ft³). This gives you the deep contour without breaking down quickly at your weights (215 & 180).
- Transition layer: 1–2" of quality polyfoam (≥2.0 lb/ft³) to prevent “bottoming out” and keep your spine neutral.
- Support core:
- All-foam option: 6–8" polyfoam core (≥2.0 lb/ft³) for max motion isolation.
- Hybrid option: 8–9" pocketed coils (preferably with edge reinforcement). Still very good on motion transfer, adds a bit more ease of movement and airflow.
- Firmness target: start around medium to medium-firm with a plush top feel (as most side sleepers land here when they want pressure relief without losing support).
How to test in-store (quick PPP check)
- Lie on your sides for 10–15 minutes: no shoulder pinch, hips should sink just enough, spine straight.
- Roll to your back: small of your back should feel supported (no gap, no sway).
- Do a couple of gentle turns: note if you feel “stuck” or if it’s easy to reposition.
- Have one of you shift around while the other is still: motion should be minimal.
Good Chicago-area stops
- Quality Sleep Shop (@Quality_Sleep_Shop) / My Green Mattress (@My_Green_Mattress)(La Grange Highlands) — factory-direct, no-pressure, and they can steer you to builds that mimic the Loom & Leaf feel but with better material specs and durability. Tell them you want a slow-response, pressure-relieving top with either an all-foam core (max motion isolation) or a pocket-coil core (if you want a touch more buoyancy/airflow).
- Nest Bedding (@NestBedding) has 3 Chicago area partner showrooms as well

Thanks for the suggestions @NikkiTMU, I actually went to the showroom to check out the Nest beds. It was not a match at all for me. While there I actually tried out several other mattresses, most of them 3Z brands. Out of everything that I looked at I felt the best match was either the Helix Midnight Luxe or the Midnight Elite. They were not the perfect mattress but the best out of (Brooklyn, Leesa, Avocada, Wink, and Nest). I just am not sure of the actual quality and long term viability of them. Thoughts on the Helix and/or others that you could recommend that would be better quality solutions?
