Pure Latex Bliss Nature: I bought one

Just to give you my mattress background, I’m coming from sleeping on a Simmons Beautyrest Alder Plush. Fairly cheap, but it was getting uncomfortable and started to slightly sink in places after six years and my back was aching. It was medium to soft in plushness, although I know that is subjective.

I’ve been searching for a latex mattress for a while. I didn’t want a foam mattress based on my friend’s gripe that it slept hot and won’t be good if I moved around a lot. He suggested latex so that’s the direction I went. I ended up getting it locally from a place called The Healthy Bed Store in Folsom, CA. The only reason I went to this store was because they were one of the few places that had a Bed in a Box mattresses on display and I was curious about their latex mattresses since this company seemed so highly rated online.

I actually didn’t like the Bed in a Box latex mattress, at all. It seemed too bouncy for me and the edges of the bed collapsed if you rolled too close. That was a bit eye opening and surprising versus my spring mattress in regards to edge strength. I’m an edge sleeper so I couldn’t handle that, at all. I felt like I was going to roll off the mattress if I slept too close to the edge. I would have been extremely disappointed to discover this if I purchased it online without trying it.

The salesman suggested I try their Pure Latex Bliss. Frankly I never even heard of it before, but it was very comfortable. Their most plush bed (forgot the name) was very nice, and would have been my first choice, but it was out of my price range. I tried the one down in plushness (Nature), and while definitely stiffer, it was still comfortable to me, especially versus where I was coming from. The most important thing was that the edge didn’t collapse like a house of cards if you rolled to it. It wasn’t as strong as my spring, but wasn’t nearly was weak as that Bed in a Box latex and it didn’t have that rolling off/falling sensation.

I ended up paying queen prices for the Cal King as they were all on sale. Still extremely expensive, but I wanted to get one. I did not get any topper as he suggested. Frankly, I wanted to try it without one first before spending a huge amount of money on the topper. I couldn’t believe how expensive that topper was by itself.

So far, so good. I would characterize the Nature bed as being firm IMO. I think the more expensive one would have been preferable as it felt softer, but for the money, I’m happy. I am a side and back sleeper and weigh about 160 lbs. My hips sink in enough, about the same or slight more than my previous bed. But, I don’t feel any pressure points like my precious spring mattress. That alone is worth it.

I may try the topper later, but for now I’m fine. Also, the bed in the store felt softer than the actual bed. Again, maybe I was hallucinating, but it sure felt that way to me.

Also, this mattress weighs 300 lbs and they told me my old box spring would void the warranty since the base needs to be solid, no slats. They also said my bed needs a center post, which it does. I was curious about these requirements until they delivered it. Heavy, heavy bed.

So, the only thing I can suggest is that if you are an edge sleeper, avoid the Bed in a Box latex. You can’t get near the edge without feeling like you’re falling off. Also, I highly suggest trying before buying, although I would recommend finding a bed that’s comfortable (based on firmness) then buying one model softer, unless you are after firm to begin with. It’s really weird how different the display versus reality was. Not enough for me to complain as I do like it, but it was and is noticeable.

Oh, sorry, I’ve been a long time lurker here, but just wanted to share my experience. Thanks for this website and forum. It has helped me a lot.

Hi Rambler,

Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed comments and feedback … I appreciate it!

As you know you certainly made a great quality and very durable choice … and congratulations on your new mattress

Just for the sake of clarification … an all latex mattress will generally do best with a firm, flat, and evenly supportive support surface underneath it that has minimal to no flex under the mattress and for larger sizes with at least one center support beam that has good support to the floor to prevent any sagging in the middle of the mattress. The components and construction needs to be strong and durable enough to support the weight of the mattress and the people sleeping on it without some of the parts bending, sagging, or breaking over time. The support surface under the mattress should have enough surface area to prevent the mattress from sagging through any gaps or spaces in the support surface over time but still allow some airflow under the mattress. I would suggest that in a slatted support system (either a foundation on a steel or wooden bedframe or a platform bed with a slatted support surface) that any gaps between the slats are no more than 3" (with 1 x 3 slats) although less than that would be better yet.

Even the “official” PLB foundations have a slatted support surface so the issue isn’t so much whether a support surface has any slats but whether the slats are strong enough and close enough together to support the mattress.

Yeah, I got their 9 inch bottom. I felt it when they delivered it and it’s completely solid.

Also, the first night was strange. I actually didn’t sleep well as it was a new experience. Was thinking I made the wrong choice that night, but it took a few days for me to get used to the differences. I blame this on my body so accustomed to my junky mattress. It’s absolutely great now. Feels softer than my previous mattress, although again it’s still “firm,” supportive and doesn’t have that springy pressure points on the heaviest part of my body.

Also, any idea why the display felt softer? I may go back to the store and try it out again, as I’m really curious if it is indeed different. Will my bed break in?

Your bed will soften a bit over time. All foams, even latex, will become a but more plush as time goes on. Also, the FR barrier will loosen a bit and soften during the first few months or so. There are also allowable variances in plushness in foam pieces, so all of these things can come into play.

The store you visited may have had their floor model on display for over a year, so it could have been subject to quite a bit of use. Some brands offer floor model discounts to retailers, as they want them to freshen up their displays frequently. Six months is pretty normal for better stores. PLB allows for floor model discounts only after one year, so it’s completely possible the mattress you tried has been out there a while.

Regardless, the Nature is the Nature and there is only one version of that mattress. So if anything, the floor model could be a representation of how your mattress will feel after months of continued use.

Regarding your foundation, the ones made for PLB by WR&G use nine slats with a cardboard deck, so it’s a flat surface. PLB recently switched to a new box supplier out of Arizona with many more slats, but that’s in their new line being introduced in March.

Thanks.

In any case, it’s a great bed, much, much better than my old one that’s for sure. I’m enjoying it greatly after that getting use to it period. I may still go feel the display, knowing full well it probably has been out there a long time, just for my own curiosity’s sake and if nothing more to see how my bed may “break in.”

Well, I went and felt the display shortly after my last post and it was softer, however, my bed a starting to break in or get softer. It’s really noticeable. The area of the mattress I sleep on is softer to the touch versus the area I have not.

It didn’t take very long for this to happen, either. It’s not deformed on any way, just softer. It’s weird how it changed, very noticeable. Not bad at all, but it definitely feels like the display now, at least the section I sleep on.

In any case, enjoying it greatly. Very pleased.

Hi Rambler,

Thanks for the update … that’s great news

I visit this site infrequently now but glad I did today and found your post. We purchased a PLB Queen Nature mattress a few years ago with the matching PLB foundation. The mattress is great but we are on our second foundation and this one needs to be replaced. It creaks and the last time we turned the mattress I noticed nail heads starting to raise the cardboard deck in a few spots. I had to nail them back down.
I am glad to see that they finally realized that their current foundation is poorly constructed with not enough slats and that they are replacing this foundation with one that has more slats from a different supplier.
I will give them a call next week and ask if the new foundations are available for replacement under the warranty.
Thanks for your very informative post.
Bob

Hi BobP,

It’s good to see you are still visiting here once in a while and I certainly appreciated your contributions to the forum :).

I hope you are successful in a warranty exchange for your foundation and I hope you let us know what happens.

PLB (now PTB) is treating this as a preferred vendor - PTB is not stocking these items and as a dealer I deal directly with this company for ordering foundations - I don’t order them through PTB. So I don’t know how you’ll be treated with your warranty issue on your current foundation. IMHO they should replace it with one of these new ones, as their old foundations were not that good.

I did check out these new foundations at market and they are very solid. The gentleman running the company is very nice and responsive. to questions.

Good luck.

Jeff,
Thanks again for the info. I will speak to one of their customer reps next week. Maybe I can get PTB (Pure Talalay BLISS) to drop ship a foundation to me from their new vendor.

My current foundation’s fabric matches the mattress fabric. If you order these foundations directly from this vendor does the foundation’s fabric also match the PTB mattress fabric??

Are the foundations shipped to you knocked down?

Bob

The fabric matches the new PTB line, which is sort of close to the side border material used on your older PLB mattress.

Yes. Assemble with carriage bolts and wing nuts.

The base I got was completely solid; couldn’t feel any slats, at all. It was also completely fabric covered. There were a few staples that I could feel on the surface below the fabric that I hammered flat. I think whoever built it didn’t take much time or effort stapling it.

Other than that, it works well from what I can tell. No noise whatsoever. Just make sure you feel the surface. I didn’t notice it at first, but when I was putting on my mattress pad, I felt one. I pushed the mattress off (which isn’t an easy feat considering the weight) and felt the entire surface. There were a few staples that weren’t completely flush, so I hammered away! Even if I didn’t do this, I don’t believe it would have been a big deal. The amount of the staple not flush was fairly small and it was below the fabric, but just something to look out for.

Also, I was hesitant to say this, as I don’t want to be responsible for anyone else, but I have a herniated disc. I use to have really bad pain, especially in the morning. Now I attribute this to my previous, very cheap mattress. That morning pain is gone. Now please keep in mind your results may vary. The last thing I want is someone rushing out and dropping $3k in a new mattress thinking it will solve their back pain on my accord and not working, so please my results may not be yours.

The staples are to secure the cardboard deck to the slats beneath it. It’s done to minimize movement and hopefully noise over time. It’s good thrat you noticed this, as it’s easy for a protruding staple to snag your fabric or cut you when rotating your bed.
