My wife and I are finally investing in a good latex bed after having a Sealy pillow top fall apart in 26 months. We have a condo that came with a used but very firm mattress that we put a $500 3" Talalay latex topper on and it is the most comfortable bed we have ever had.
We are both side sleepers and not overly big people(6’ 180lbs. & 5’10" 135lbs) and would prefer to buy from a local specialty retailer that can deliver, set up, and haul away our old bed. Both of us sleep well but the lack of support from our current bed sometimes will give me a slightly stiff lower back in the morning. We have found a retailer that is very good and we both seem to get great alignment and support from a Pure Latex Bliss Pamper with a separate 3" Talalay topper. The mattress seems to be the perfect firmness with this topper and I like the idea of being able to replace the topper instead of the whole mattress in 5-10 years if it is worn out. The sale price on this Cal King complete bed with foundation and the 3" topper is $3000. Is this a fair price for a latex bed from a local retailer and is the quality of the latex in this bed good(I believe it is latex international)? We are happy to spend more for better quality.
I think that you would spend at least 2500 for something similar online. This is without the setup and breakdown or taking your mattress away. Also, you wouldn’t be able to try before you bought it. I’ll let others speak on the quality of the Pure Bliss mattresses.
Thanks, I was thinking it was a fair price for that mattress. I do like the fact that we can try everything out and exchange the mattress or topper easily if needed. The owner of the store that I have been dealing with is extremely knowledgeable and patient and has good reviews for customer service. It looks like I’m getting a full refund on the bed that I purchased from Costco 26 months ago so I will have $1400 to put towards the new latex bed.
The Pamper uses good quality materials and there are no “weak links” in the mattress so if you have done some careful and objective testing and it’s a good “match” for you in terms of PPP then from this perspective it would make a good quality choice. Blended Talalay latex is a high quality material.
In terms of the “value” of a mattress purchase … it would really depend on what else is available to you in your area and what you are comparing it to based on the parts of your personal value equation that are most important to you.
I don’t know the “mattress only” price which is the most effective way to make comparisons between mattresses (there are many foundations that can be used with a latex mattress and they can be compared or purchased separately) but in terms of it’s “commodity value” (which is only one part of the value of a mattress purchase and arguably not the most important part) it seems fair to me. Your mattress/topper has 11" of blended Talalay latex and would be more than some mattresses with the same or a similar amount of latex in a similar cover and less than others that would also make good choices but the number of inches of latex doesn’t say anything about how suitable a mattress may be in terms of PPP. Post #32 here includes some retailers that sell PLB mattresses online that may be worth talking to so you can make some “value comparisons” with the same mattress/topper that you purchased.
For what it is worth, in my local shop a Cal King Pamper with PLB latex foundation and topper would run more than $3000 even on super special. I think it’s good value.
At the same store I priced out a “50% off” Queen Beautiful on foundation with topper, and it was close to $3500. Crummy exchange policy, and no in-house service or delivery. But I’m in Canada.
