Question about latex cores

Hi all,
I’ve been lurking here for a while and recently bought a latex mattress from one of the highly recommended places listed here. I received 3 3 inch layers. 2 of them looked very nice but one had a tear in it. The company nicely replaced it with another but the new one looks like it also had a tear and was glued together or made a hard stain on it. It also has a date on it that is 2 years old.

Being new I wanted to see if this was normal and if I was just being too critical .

Hi Mtbrown,

First off, congratulations on your new mattress!

I’m sorry you’ve experienced some issues with tears in your latex. As you’re probably already aware from handling latex layers, they can easily be torn, but smaller tears generally don’t impact performance. Some brands consider up to a 3" tear within their normal guidelines without it impacting durability.

I can’t speak to your particular piece of foam, but a manufacturer certainly could use a small amount of adhesive (like they use to seam layers together) if they discovered a tear. Regarding age, most manufacturers have a high turnover of their latex, but if it is an imported latex, these could take 6-9 months from order placement to arrive. So if these were layers of a less popular imported latex, it is possible that these layers could have been around for a while. Again, this is just speculation on my part, as I have no real information specific to your actual piece of foam.

Regarding being too critical, that’s of course up to you, and if you feel that you want a piece of latex without any “repair” in it, I’d place a polite phone call and speak with someone and let them know you’d like another replacement. At that time, you could also ask any questions about what you’re seeing as a date on the product and if it is indeed a production date, and any other questions you may have. Personally, I don’t see you being too critical making that phone call and request, nor would I personally have a concern keeping this particular piece of latex.

I really don’t know if I answered your question there :S , but I am interested in learning about what you decide to do.

Thank you much for the reply. I think I will give them a call tomorrow and see what they say.
You bring up a good point about the age. This layer is Xtra firm. Maybe they don’t sell much of it. Odd though that the first one they sent was only 3 months old.
If you don’t mind I’d like to ask another question. Should I be worried that the replacement layer is a darker color than the other 3 layers? I’m unsure if the natural latex I ordered would look any different than a blended latex.

Thanks much again

Hi Mtbrown,

No, I wouldn’t necessarily have a concern. The color will vary depending upon the type of latex and the blend. There’s more about this in post #2 here.

Thanks again for the help. I was worried that they had accidentally sent a Blended synthetic latex instead of the natural Dunlop. I’m going to call them later on tonight. I’m on the east coast and they are in California.

Thank you again

Just a quick update. I called yesterday and they just needed an email with pictures. He is going to email back on Monday.

Hi Mtbrown,

Sounds good. Keep us updated.

Just wanted to update this thread. They did take the layer back and said it was a mistake. The new one came 2weeks ago and honestly this mattress is so much better than springs. I had no problems adjusting to it like some others mentioned.
Thx so much for this site and all the help!

Hi Mtbrown,

Thank you for taking the time to share your update, and most importantly, I’m glad you were taken care of by your manufacturer and have received your replacement layer and are adjusting well to your new mattress. Congratulations! :cheer:
