Question about latex mattresses

Matelas Lapensée in Ottawa, Canada allows customers to select layers for them to build the mattress at their warehouse. As it stands, this is what they have in the showroom:

Support layer:
900 pocket springs

Confort layer:
bottom - 2" Talalay latex (density: 4 or 5lbs per cubic foot)
top - 1" soy-based foam (density: 3lbs per cubic foot if I recall correctly)

Reversible side:
bottom: 1" Talalay latex
top: 1" soy-based foam

Would there be much benefit or drawbacks in switching this to:

Support layer:
900 pocket springs

Confort layer:
bottom: 3" or 4" Talalay latex
Top: 1" or no soy-based foam

Reversible side:
nothing

Hi monsieurmac,

The original layering is two sided and finished on both sides so you would lose the extra durability of having a two sided mattress (assuming you used both sides) and any benefits that came from having two different sleep surfaces (one probably firmer and one probably softer). They would probably need to keep at least the polyfoam layer on the bottom as a stabilization layer for the innerspring but they are the ones that could tell you more about the options they offer.

What you would gain is the ability for more design flexibility in having more latex layers that you could customize to your preferences.

The benefits of having a one sided mattress with all the latex layers on one side of the mattress would depend on the thickness and firmness choices of the latex layers and on whether it was an improvement in terms of PPP (Pressure relief, Posture and alignment, and Personal preferences) compared to either or both of the layering combinations of the two sided version and whether any improvement would be worth it to you compared to what you would be giving up.

Can I get your opinion on the quality of the following layers on a king size bed:

From top to bottom:

1" Soy foam - 2lbs per cubic foot
2" Natural Talalay Latex foram - 6lbs per cubic foot
800 Pocket Coils compressed to 6" at 13 or 16 gauge (can’t remember)
1" Soy foam - 2lbs per cubic foot

Extra features:
Certified Certi-Pur
Steel Contoured Edge Support

Cost: $1049+ tax
Would it be worth requesting a denser (3lbs per cubic foot) soy foam for either the top, bottom, or both?

Hi monsieurmac,

In terms of the quality of the materials they look good to me with no obvious weak links. The polyfoam in the upper layers is good quality and less than the guideline I usually use which is less than “around an inch” or so of lower quality polyfoam in a one sided construction (and this is not “lower quality” and is higher density than you usually see).

I would say that if you have tested it carefully and objectively in terms of PPP (Pressure relief, Posture and alignment, and Personal preferences) and it “fits” your needs and preferences then this would be a very suitable and good value choice

It certainly wouldn’t harm it and it would depend on the extra costs involved and how it would change the surface feel of the mattress but given the quality of the polyfoam that is already in the top layer and that you have already tested it as it is … I wouldn’t consider this to be an issue no (and the bottom stabilization layer under the innerspring isn’t an issue either because it is on the very bottom of the mattress and using higher density and higher performance foam here would probably not be worth it).

Does Matelas Lapensee make this as well or is it from another manufacturer?

Hi Phoenix,

Thanks for your input. I’m still going through a few additional tests for the PPP but my first impression is that it appears to meet my needs. I just haven’t had a chance to get my wife to test it as well so we’ll likely do that in the next few days. It also sounds like upgrading to a 3lb per cubic foot foam is not likely to be a worthwhile investment unless it’s under $100 and even then, it will probably change the way it feels and I wouldn’t be able to test that as it would be custom made. that way. Reading your comments makes me realize that it’s probably not an issue as they are already putting in quality materials to begin with.

As for your question, yes this mattress is also from Matelas Lapensée.
