Hello again,
I’m back with hopefully my last question for awhile.
I’m currently in the process of replacing a few of the layers on my 12" blended Talalay mattress.
My plan is to replace both the top and support layer. The top has been replaced, the support layer is what brings me back here.
The current support layer is 2" 24 ILD blended Talalay.
I want to replace with a 3" topper instead.
This way, when I replace the core, I will buy a 6" core (currently 7") and will still have a 12" mattress.
I read that comparing a 2" topper and a 3" topper of the same type of material and firmness on the floor it will be very clear that the 3" topper will feel softer.
So, I wanted to inquire.
I currently see both 22 ILD and 28 ILD available in a 100% natural Talalay.
I’m 5’9" 175 lbs, side sleeper, athletic build, sleep solo.
If replacing a 2" 24 ILD blended Talalay layer with a 3" 28 ILD 100% natural Talalay topper, if one would notice/feel a difference?
If so, would it be better using a 3" 22 ILD 100% natural Talalay topper?
Or just locate a 3" 24 ILD 100% natural Talalay topper?
Thank you in advance for any suggestions/advice you could pass along.
If the mattress was working really well for you before then I would suggest keeping the exact same design and just replace the old layers with new ones using the same specs. If you are worried about the height of a core changing from 7" to 6" then you can always get a 1" firm (46ILD) latex layer from Sleep on Latex that can be put at the very bottom which brings you right back to your original mattress height again.
[b]Thank you for the reply mattrebuild,
Normally I would agree. If it’s not broken why fix it.
The reason that I was thinking of making the changes was due to the manufacturer actually replaced the top layer with a very soft layer, the 2" 24 ILD with 3" of 24" ILD and removing the 1" stabilizer from the bottom of the core.
Back in the day, I tried out a mattress with these changes and loved it, thinking the mattress I purchased was the same…
It wasn’t until I removed the covers from the mattress I realized I have a first release model.
Obviously, I couldn’t feel the difference.
As well as, I see lots of 22 ILD and 28 ILD available, not so much of the 24 ILD.
Thanks![/
That was definitely helpful additional info for sure. Sounds like you answered your own question in the process. Aside from that 24 ILD is definitely still available, it’s just special order versus those other ILDs you mentioned which are more commonly carried firmnesses.
