Questions about Ikea latex mattresses

Hi Phoenix,

Glad to find people like you still exist - who really care and are trying their best to spread correct information to people who make an attempt to search and learn for themselves.

Some time ago I slept with my son (he is 11) - just for old-times sake - and had a very very sore back the next day. I have had low back issues for years and hence am able to tell whether a chair is comfortable or not just by sitting on it once. For the mattress - however - it took a full night’s sleep to figure that out and a couple more days to get my back in order.

Last week (4th July) we went to our local IKEA in Dallas for some shopping and bought a new low bed (Malm) and a Full - size “Sultan Finnvik” mattress for our son’s bedroom. Again tried it out and I felt fine the next morning - but my son refused to sleep in that bed after the 1st night. I persisted and slept again - and this time ended up with a rounded upper back that I could not straighten. Later that morning right middle part of my back went into a spasm (I am 5’ 7" and 120 lbs) and am still recovering from that. It took me a while to consider that this is very likely due to the mattress - since this model does not provide any real support to the body whatsoever - something I have learnt after spending long hours on your mattress forum for the past 2 days.

IKEA does not refund money - so I have a choice of exchanging (upgrading) from them or getting a store credit and look somewhere else. Looking at the remaining mattresses @IKEA only these are our options:

Foam with Latex top:

  1. SULTAN FOSSING - Latex and foam mattress - $429.00 has only 1" of latex on the top. The specs are:
    Comfort material: 20 % natural/ 80 % synthetic latex, High-resilience polyurethane foam (cold foam) 2.2 lb/cu.ft., 100 % lamb’s wool, Polyester/viscose (rayon) fiber wadding

  2. SULTAN FJORDGARD - Latex and foam mattress - $629.00 has 1.75" of latex top. Specs are:
    Comfort material: 20 % natural/ 80 % synthetic latex, High-resilience polyurethane foam (cold foam) 2.2 lb/cu.ft., High-resilience polyurethane foam (cold foam) 2.2 lb/cu.ft., 100 % lamb’s wool, Polyester/viscose (rayon) fiber wadding

Full Latex:
3. SULTAN ELSFJORD (5.5" thick)- Latex mattress - $449.00. Specs are:
Comfort material: Synthetic latex, Polyester/viscose (rayon) fiber wadding, Polyester wadding
Protective fabric: Non-woven polypropylene
Fire-retardant interliner: 100 % cotton

  1. SULTAN ENGENES (7 1/8" thick) - Latex mattress - $649.00. Specs are:
Comfort material: 20 % natural/ 80 % synthetic latex, Polyester/viscose (rayon) fiber wadding, Polyester wadding
    Protective fabric: Non-woven polypropylene
    Fire-retardant interliner: 100 % cotton

I am not considering the SULTAN EDSELE mattress which is about 8" thick and $929 for full latex (85% natural, 15% synthetic) as we do not wish to spend that much money.

Could you recommend which is a good mattress to go for from the above - or is it better to return this for store credit and buy from another store. I really do not want to spend more than 650 - 700 on a mattress. We prefer to be frugal on purpose. I myself have for a decent part of my life (partially due to back issues) have slept on the floor. Currently use an old doubled up comforter with another layer or doubled up wollen blanket (from India) - not sure you would know what these are. This will give you a good idea -

Don’t want to indulge the kid too much - should just be comfortable enough to sleep on and give decent support.

Looking for your expert opinion - if you have a recommendation of any local store where we can get a full mattress with some / all latex in that price range - I am happy to check it out too.

Regards
Sanjay

Hi Phoenix

Also noticed that this mattress on amazon has almost immaculate reviews. Do you think these are staged reviews?

Hi sanjay5goel,

No the reviews for this mattress are quite real.

Brooklyn mattress (which makes the mattress) is one of the members here which means that I think very highly of them and believe they are among the highest quality and value mattress manufacturers or outlets in the country in terms of quality and value. If you do a search on “Ultimate Dreams” on the forum (you can just click the link) you will find lots of discussion and more information about them. Because they are members … they also give the forum members here a free shredded latex pillow with their mattress purchase as a bonus (as long as you tell them you’re a member of “The Mattress Underground” and provide your username when you order it or when they follow up to customize your choice).

Hi Phoenix

Did you see my first mail - the long one I posted about the various options at IKEA itself? Do you not consider anything else at IKEA or any other good local company in the metroplex to be near my budget ?
