Reasonably Priced Latex Mattresses In Northern Virginia

Are there any recommended mattress stores near Northern Virginia that sell all latex configurable mattresses? We used to have Urban Mattress in Vienna, I bought a Sherwood Mattress from them and it was too firm, added toppers but couldn’t take it any more. My husband and I then went to Sleepare and bought a Brooklyn Mattress Firm because my husband thought would need the support. It again was to firm for both of us. Toppers not enough. I want the next purchase to last, so I don’t want to make another mistake in purchasing.

I’m now leaning towards an all latex mattress. I have severe hip pain and a pinched nerve shooting down my leg into my foot. I am mainly a side sleeper and but have had to sleep on my back now and in various other places in the house because of the pain. We are both close to 60 years old, both about 180 lbs, I’m 5’9” and he is 5’7”, we need back support and I need a lot of pressure relief (hip bursitis and one hip replaced) and tend to sleep hot. It doesn’t help since the dogs share our bed too. The last good mattress we owned was a 21st Century Mattress by Englander. The mattresses we have tried since are horrible and the quality from 20-30 years ago is no more.

Need recommendations for a latex I’m thinking 3 layers of 3” latex with different layers on each of our sides. Would love if I could try out the mattress locally before buying. I need recommendations as I can’t afford to make another costly mistake on a mattress. Would like a zippable cover that I can switch out the layers on if they don’t work out or deteriorate over time. Any help and recommendations would be greatly appreciated. I’m hoping the third time is a charm, as I haven’t slept well in years all of the pain. it is currently intolerable to sleep with the pain.

If nothing local, who would you recommend buying from online? I don’t know why the DC area doesn’t seem to have many vendors in latex mattresses.

Hey there, ThirdTimesACharm,

Welcome to the Mattress UnderGround, we are happy to have you here and appreciate the question.

It sounds like you’ve been through a lot trying to find the right mattress, and it makes sense that you want to get it right this time. When thinking about a mattress, I like to consider the PPPs: Pressure relief, Posture and alignment, and Personal preferences. Pressure relief is key for your hips and pinched nerve, posture and alignment make sure your spine is supported correctly, and personal preferences cover things like firmness, sleeping hot, and whether you share the bed with pets.

A mattress is made of three main parts: the support layer, the comfort layer, and the cover or panel. The support layer is usually the base, it keeps your spine aligned and supports your body over time. The comfort layer is what you feel when you lie down; it’s where pressure relief happens and can be tailored to softness or firmness for each sleeper. The cover or panel protects the mattress, can help with cooling, and, if it’s zippable, lets you swap or adjust layers over time. No mattress should be bought without making sure it has an appropriate and supportive foundation underneath, or even the best mattress won’t perform properly.

For a local try-before-you-buy option, Sleepare in Northern Virginia carries 3Z brand mattresses and should have the Birch and Nolah Natural latex mattresses and some offer Avocado to test. Trying these can help you figure out what feels best in terms of softness, support, and cooling. It will also allow you get the feel of a latex mattress, as latex does have a different feel to them.

At that point, if any of the ready to go latex mattresses do not quite do it for you, it is time to have a conversation with some of the TM’s here at the Mattress Underground who specialize in all or hybrid latex mattresses that they build from the ground up. If you want a mattress tailored specifically to you and your husband, companies like @Arizona_Premium and @Sleep_EZ make fully customizable all-latex or hybrid mattresses with modular layers. Nationwide shippers like @EthicalMattress(non modular or zipper covers, but great hybrids) and modular designs by @FloBeds, @CST also offer this, and many come with zippable covers so you can swap layers if your needs change.

Once your mattress and foundation are set up, it’s worth looking at pillows too. A small rotation of pillows, different heights and firmness, can make a big difference for supporting your neck, spine, and hips in different positions, especially when side sleeping or dealing with pain.

With all of that worked out, the PPPs, the layers, a solid foundation, and the right pillows, you’ll give yourself the best shot at a mattress that actually helps with pain and lasts for years.

Although it’s sensible to test a mattress first, depending on where you live, it may not always be possible to try the exact mattress you want to take home. That shouldn’t be a deterrent. Many manufacturers today understand this and offer very generous trial periods. Some do have fees for returns or exchanges, but these are often manufacturer-direct mattresses, which usually cost less upfront, making it easier and more practical to fine-tune comfort. If you need to swap a layer or make an exchange, the small cost is often worth it in the long run. Some people get too caught up on paying a small fee to adjust their mattress, but in the big picture it’s usually far less than buying a brand-name mattress that doesn’t work for them.

No mattress company likes returns, but when you work with a Trusted Member mattress maker here at TMU, their goal is to listen to your successes and failures, understand your PPPs, and fit you with the right mattress the first time, even if that requires working from a distance.

Hopefully this will set you on the right path.

Im gonna put a word in for the nest and wild mattress. Its not all latex, but my parents love it and its the perfect balance of supportive and soft. Their foams are pre stressed so you don’t have to worry about them wearing out. It uses a quadcoil system which compresses but also holds its shape very well because of the design. On top of the coils is a 2" layer of high density memory foam, and on top of that is a 2" layer of memory foam/latex hybrid that gives the best properties of both.

My preference for latex only is a pocket coil system with latex on top since an all latex bed can get very expensive.

Youll notice most upgraded versions of standard latex beds simply add a layer of soft on top of the medium latex. If you can find a birch luxe for cheap on facebook marketplace i absolutely recommend that. I found one for $475 in my area.

Thanks @Maverick for the information. I will go back to Sleepare again and try the mattresses you mentioned. I bought the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora there in late 2019, which is the one I can’t abide, it is just too firm. The latax topper still made it too hard and Brooklyn gave me a discount on a topper, but it was a bit too soft and riped up at about 18 months. When I tried there before all of the latex mattress seemed a little too firm.

After reading some more on here, I am also looking into Back Science Series 3 too (crazy expensive, but I may have to bite the bullet). I can’t afford to make another mistake. In 8 years, I spent $5.5k. It sound like what I might like and may provide the support and pressure relief I need. When I get into the current mattress it send pain into my foot and makes it cramp on the bad hip side, even on my back. I also have mild scoliosis between my shoulders and have super tight muscles that barely respond if I do weekly massages (gave that a trial run too). The acupucturist is currently keeping me moving. My husband sleeps in all positions and also has shoulder rotator cuff issues and degenerative disk disease. Getting older just sucks!

I’m open to other options. Our old 21st Century Englander Mattress was the one that we liked the best and it lasted 20 years. I added a latex topper to get the last 3 years out of it. It was very back supportive, but super great on pressure relief, we use to joke that it was hard to get out of bed because it was so comfortable. Like a cloud with a mild hug, if that makes since. It was easy for move around on with minimal motion issues.

Any thoughts or opinions on @BackScience are welcomed too. Thanks for the advice.

Thanks @Gc123. I’m going to try the Birch Luxe tomorrow at Sleepare and will then try Facebook Marketplace if I like it to see if it may work. I was looking at the Nest & Wild Mattresses too, they seem affordable.

@Backscience is a great choice and they can customize it if needed. They are a company that is very good at fitting a sleeper with the perfect mattress.

@Maverick Thanks for the follow up. From reading online and some reviews on Mattress Underground this may be the best choice, since it sounds like they could send me layers to replace and/or add to adjust the bed. It was more than I wanted to spend, but if I can add layers when it ages, this may work. I just read the limited warranty and although it is 30 years, the cost to ship back would be crazy expensive since I’m on the east coast.

I will call @BackScience and see if they can answer some additional questions. It will already cost a bunch more because they recommend the solid base, rather that slats close together and I will also have to pay to get someone to get it into the house and remove and get rid of the current bed.

I took the 4" topper off of the bed today to see if it helps on the current mattress and my husband likes it better already. I will attempt to sleep there tonight and see if works for me, but it feels like the pressure is still too much on my hip.

Thanks for mentioning pillows. If I change mattresses I may have to adjust them. My husband, uncle and I all tried out about 10 different pillows for neck issues. We tried some generic brands, purple (those were crazy heavy), solid and shredded foams (latex and memory), and we both ended up liking the Malouf cutout dough memory foam pillow the best. My husband like the same one without the cutout, but when I was out of town on a business trip he ended up liking the shoulder cutout too. I have been using various, head, knee and body pillows to help with hip alignment too. I’m going to wait for a sale and try the LaNoodle latex pillow from @CozyPure too.

Thank you for reaching out here on the forum. Dealing with radiating hip pain, scoliosis, rotator cuff issues, and degenerative disc disease all at once is incredibly difficult, and it is completely understandable to be exhausted from spending money on mattresses that just don’t work.

As a chiropractor and mattress designer for over 25 years, I look at the biomechanics of sleep challenges. The radiating pain into the foot and the cramping on the bad hip side are clear indicators that a sleep surface is either too firm and creating pressure points, or it lacks the proper lumbar lift, causing the spine to drop out of alignment. Degenerative disc disease also requires strict spinal neutrality, while rotator cuff issues demand extreme pressure relief on the surface.

It makes perfect sense why firmer mattresses and latex options often fail in these situations. Latex is very supportive but has a strong pushback that can aggravate sensitive hips and tight muscles.

Finding a mattress that feels like a cloud with a mild hug, providing great support but extreme pressure relief, is exactly what the Back Science Series 3 Hybrid is designed to do.

The Series 3 uses our thickest, most luxurious comfort layers of buoyant Hypergel. This provides cloud-like pressure relief to cushion the hip and shoulder without the quicksand or sinking feeling of memory foam or the hardness of latex. Beneath that plush surface is our patent pending Lumbar-Flex Zoned Support system. This actively reinforces the center third of the mattress, ensuring that while the shoulders and hips sink in comfortably, the lower back and discs are held in proper alignment.

The fear of making another expensive mistake is exactly why we utilize our GripLock Modular cover system. If the Series 3 needs to be tweaked, there is no need to return the whole bed. We offer a 365-Night Sleep Trial and provide free comfort customizations where we send new internal components to swap out until the feel is perfect for the level of comfort or support that matches your specific spinal needs.

We would love to help stop the cycle of painful mattress purchases. Please feel free to visit our website at www.BackScience.com to look at the design, or give us a call directly at 800 667-1969 to discuss the situation in more depth.

Also, please remember that members of The Mattress Underground can use the code TMU10 at checkout for an additional 10% off the purchase.

There’s a place in Roanoke, I know it’s not in the neighborhood but you might want to check it out, called Sleep Essentials.
