Replacing 31 Year-Old Therapedic Latex Mattress

This is my first posting, and I’d like to begin by thanking Phoenix for this tremendously helpful website!!

I’m about to replace a 31 year-old queen-size Therapedic latex mattress. (More precisely, it has a manufacturing tag on it that says “1/31/1983.”) It’s 7 1/2 inches thick and is labeled “Genuine Latex Foam Rubber,” but the type of latex used is not stated either on the mattress or in my purchase papers (which I still have). I can still see the words “Pillow Plush” on the mattress.

I’m curious: What kind of latex was likely used in this mattress? i couldn’t get any information from Therapedic, and the store where I bought it is long gone. I suspect that it’s dunlop latex, but I can’t be sure.

Hi Sleepmice,

I don’t know which type of latex was used in your mattress but both natural Dunlop and blended Talalay were in fairly wide use at the time and both have a history of lasting for decades so it could be either one.

Either way … that’s one very long lasting mattress

Thanks for your comment, Phoenix. Actually, the mattress has been sagging in recent years, so I would say that it remained in good shape for perhaps 20-25 years.

A few minutes ago I ordered a new mattress from SleepEZ, a queen Organic 9" latex with the top 2" layer 100% natural Talalay (“soft”) and the two lower 3" layers both 100% natural Dunlop (“medium” and “firm,” respectively). Some time ago I never would have imagined that I would buy a mattress online, but your website was a huge help!

Hi Sleepmice,

I’m glad the site could help you and you certainly made a great choice. I imagine that it probably helped as well that you were already familiar with latex.

Congratulations on your new mattress
