So we bought a new mattress about a month ago from Select Sleep Center in Union City, CA. Overall we’ve been very pleased with it, although I’m still tinkering with the top comfort layer for me to get the right latex softness, but overall it’s much more supportive and sleeps “cooler” than did our Simmons pillow top, but I was still waking up too hot some nights. We had a waterproof membrane mattress cover that we’ve had for several years, and I decided I wanted something more breathable and also with a little more cushion. I considered getting the St. Dormier wool cover, but I was intrigued by the descriptions of some of the mulberry silk toppers I’ve seen, although put off by the high price tag on many of them. I’m also mildly allergic to wool, and I like to ski with lightweight silk long underwear and have found it’s more breathable than wool. I looked on ebay and there are several direct sellers who make them and ship them directly from China. One of them had over a thousand positive reviews, and no negatives, and they were listing a fairly heavy weight (2 kg) silk topper made with Grade A long fiber mulberry silk, and the price was reasonable, $145 for a Cal King including shipping. I ordered it and it arrived ten days later, not bad for international shipping. The first few days DH was gone and I actually wrapped up in it and used as a combo topper and comforter. After he got back we put it on as a topper/mattress cover and have used it that way for about ten days. The benefits I’ve noticed so far - it’s extremely breathable, and I haven’t woken up sweaty or hot, which considering the wild temp swings we get at this time in California is impressive. It definitely feels luxurious and adds a little cushion on top of our dunlop latex top layer. It seems high quality and has a nice 300 thread count outer cover, and a zipper so you can examine the silk within, and elastic corner straps. No smell, unlike what I’ve read about some of the lower quality silk toppers, especially ones made of other types of silk. The main downside is that they don’t recommend machine washing most silk toppers - so you can spot clean it or dry clean, and they recommend airing it out in the sun. I feel it will offer adequate protection for our expensive organic cotton/wool mattress cover, and one option if you are worried about liquids might be to combine it with a wool “puddle pads”. We have fairly heavyweight sheets, so I don’t think I’ll bother, but obviously it’s a factor for many people.
Hi valli,
Thanks for the feedback about your silk topper
Silk is certainly one of the most breathable and durable of all the natural fibers and is great for temperature regulation and humidity control.
It would be great if you could link where you purchased it so that other forum members could add it to their options as well since the price you paid appears to be very good.
