Review of New York City mattress stores (excluding memory foam)

So- I have visited 4 stores so far in my search for a comfy non-memory foam mattress. Haven’t found the “one” yet, but found some very knowledgeable sales people and high quality store.

  1. Coco-mats on Mercer Street. The most patient and helpful staff, ever. Coco-mats have several layers that can be tweaked to make them softer or firmer and the sales guy did several tweakings in an attempt to help my daughter. I don’t even think it was a sales tactic, he genuinely wanted her to be comfortable. The mattresses aren’t cheap - especially after the topper is added in. There is a full description of all the mattress components.
  2. Scott Jordan on Varick Street. They were having a sale and when I mentioned the site, the salesperson immediately said I could have the sales discount and the site discount of 5%. Not only is there a full description of each mattress, there is a foot square segment of each mattress, with the coils, latex topper etc, so you can see the inside of each mattress. Salesperson was knowledgeable about their mattresses but not so much about back and alignment issues. We found the beds to be the comfiest. There is a wide range of prices.
3 Keetsa on Mercer. Detailed written descriptions of each mattress - unfortunately most have memory foam. the salesperson seemed the most knowledgeable about mattresses in general - and recommended other brands that he thought would be a better fit when theirs didn’t work out. Very reasonable prices.
  3. Long Bedding - what a letdown! My daughter smelled weird fumes in the showroom. When we didn’t jump for joy at the first mattress (with a $3500 price tag), the sales person lost interest in us - even though there was only one other person shopping. He couldn’t answer any questions about the materials in some of the mattresses. Why would you recommend mystery mattresses after we told you that we needed hypoallergenic, non-memory foam products?

We have more stores to visit - still looking for the most memory foam like mattress without memory foam. My daughter is missing the sinking down feeling you get with memory.

Hi dpastor,

Thanks for sharing your comments and feedback about the stores you visited … I appreciate it

While you don’t see it very often because it isn’t widely available … it may be worth talking to Arizona Premium about their slow response latex topper and using it on top of a firmer mattress if your daughter is looking for a slow response material that isn’t memory foam.

OK - had to stop the search for awhile - but I went to two more stores in NYC - The Clean Bedroom and Dixie Foam. The Clean Bedroom has a great selection and a knowledgable salesperson. One of the mattresses turned out to be THE most comfy one that I tried. It was both supportive and cloud-like. It was also about $6000 for a queen. The high end mattresses are great - but I found nothing I liked in my price range. Sigh…

On to Dixie Foam. First off, they have THE BEST SALES STAFF of any store. I went twice, saw two different people and both of them were knowledgeable, caring and no-pressure. They listened carefully to what my daughter wanted and came up with some creative ideas. One idea even involved a product that they don’t make, but they were happy to recommend a store that did (trizone mattress). And guess what, they also had the BEST PRICES. I went with a custom order mattress - their cloudrest med firm mattress with 5" of natural latex topper (about twice what the regular model had). It was only an extra $250 to have a custom made mattress - and a slightly longer wait time too. Totally worth it. My daughter loves the bed - what a relief. Thanks to this site for steering us to Dixie Foam.

Hi dpastor,

Thanks for taking the time to share your update and experiences and for letting us know what you ended up deciding for your daughter.

As you probably know from your reading here I think highly of Mark and Dixie Foam and you certainly made a great quality/value choice … and of course more importantly your daughter loves it. (UPDATE : They are now a member of this site as well)

Congratulations on your new mattress
