Review of purchasing experience at SleepMaster Mattress (Central NY State)

Because my mattress situation was so dire (a broken spring in my 15 year old Serta), I had to make a decision fairly quickly on a new mattress. This forum was unbelievably helpful in doing so. I knew the right questions to ask, the right things to look for, and most of all, where to look. Thank you, Mattress Underground!

I will never shop at a big box or mass retailer again for a mattress. And because of how different all the mattresses feel, I am pretty sure I’ll never be able to purchase a mattress online (without testing), either.

The sales people at Sleep Master Mattress/WJ Southard were incredibly helpful. They could answer any question I had about the construction of every mattress in the store. There was no sales pressure. I told them what I was looking for, and they offered their recommendations but let me test and try every mattress that caught my eye. They have a HUGE range of prices, from $300 for a clearance twin mattress to $5000+ for a california king set, with a wide range of styles and options, all locally made, all warrantied.

I ended up falling in love with a hybrid innerspring/latex model that was a bit out of my price range. The PPP was absolutely perfect; it’s everything I’ve dreamed of having in a bed. After 15 minutes of full relaxation on the bed, I could feel no pressure points or pain. I was able to purchase the floor model queen set at a significant discount, and paid close to $2500 less than I would have for the comparable hybrid mattress from Sealy. Locally made and sold really does affect the price!

The factory and store are both located in Syracuse, NY. I really think anyone in the Northeast would do well to consider this mattress manufacturer.

Specs on my new mattress:
comfort layer: 4" of organic Dunlop Latex (this particular bed has an ILD in the low 20s)
“Made with our blend of organic and pure wool. Nothing else. No polyester, flame retardants or other synthetic materials.”

support layer: 2.8lb HR polyfoam
Posturized HDF center foam (belly band)
coil density: 860 12 gauge hand-wrapped pocket coils (queen)
Comes with a custom foundation in the set designed to extend the life of the bed.

The mattress gets delivered on Tuesday. I can’t wait.

Hi katiemac3,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts and experiences with Sleepmaster in such detail … I appreciate it!

You are a great example of why who you purchase from can be one of the most important parts of a successful mattress purchase and you certainly made a great quality choice.

Congratulations on your new mattress

I’m looking forward to your feedback when you receive it and have had the chance to sleep on it for a bit.

After a week of sleeping on it, I remain completely in love with my new latex-topped hybrid innerspring mattress.

There are a few main points that I’d like to emphasize:

  1. It is actually softer and has a bit more give/conform to it than the 100% latex mattresses I tried. There are no noticeable pressure points and I am a side-sleeper. After a few days to adjust to the new mattress, I have to say I am getting better and deeper sleep, and waking up more comfortable and rested than I have in years. This mattress is a miracle!

  2. I sleep hot, so memory foam was not an option for me. The latex appears to be ‘temperature-neutral,’ if you will. It is neither chilly nor over-warm, leading to perfect sleeping temperature.

  3. The combination of the innerspring and 4" of organic latex makes for a rather deep mattress at about 14" and it’s quite heavy. Although it isn’t hard to find sheets for this mattress, it is difficult to move it on my own. Fortunately, SleepMaster Mattress has amazing delivery including setup, and they also took away my old mattress, box spring, and frame, for recycling.

  4. Again, the personal trial was key here. I would have expected the 100% latex mattress to be what I needed, but after trying them out, it was clearly not the case and the innerspring hybrid was much more suitable. The fact that these mattresses are also manufactured locally in New York State with 100% USA made materials (and that the company will repair them right here if needed) was also a huge selling point for me. The entire Queen set ended up being only about $300 more than the Casper mattress I was looking at for purchase.

  5. There was no off-gassing and there is no odor to the mattress at all.

Thanks again for all the help, Mattress Underground!
