Hey there,
A couple of months ago we started looking for a mattress, didn’t feel strongly about anything we saw in the major retail outlets, couldn’t comparison shop, looked on line about why not and found The Mattress Underground. Then we found out about latex and that we were lucky enough to have an R&S Mattress near by where we could try some out. We went with the in-store version of the Brooklyn Bedding Bliss which retails for around $1799 for a king, including box springs. They threw in a free mattress protector and a free frame which was nice (though they did it on the invoice by marking down the mattress which made me wonder if I did a comfort exchange if they’d try and cheap out on what they’d let me exchange for… But they seemed like they’d be genuinely willing to help out. Luckily we haven’t had to do anything yet. More details below.). The Bliss in store is similar to the one on the website, but a bit different according to the people at the store. It only comes in 19 Ild Talalay on the top 3" followed by a 24" layer of Talalay and then 6" of soy based polyfoam on the bottom. No other comfort layers, etc. like the one on the website. Also, the layers are glued together, and there’s no zipper, so you can’t exchange comfort layers later on like you can with the beds on the websites. We did see a bed in store that had been returned from the online site, and it looked like the layers had a propensity to get unevenly laid out in the covering, so we were kind of excited to have layers that were glued together.
We paid for the bed on a Wednesday, it came to us from Phoenix on Friday, two day later, and the date on the tag on the mattress said it had been manufactured on the Wednesday we paid for it. Fresh latex! There was a bit of a smell, but we turned on a fan and opened the windows. It didn’t totally dissipate, but after a couple of days it wasn’t too bad, and now two and a half weeks later it’s basically not noticeable unless you dig your nose into the mattress. Awesomely, the delivery guys did all the heavy lifting and setting up of the frame, so getting up the stairs to our bedroom wasn’t too bad.
We were initially worried about it being too soft but it’s actually been quite nice We like the plush feeling when we first lay down and then feel totally supported afterwards. We were also worried about heat perhaps, thought the memory foam topper was pretty hot to begin with. Haven’t really noticed any heat issues, even though it’s gotten quite warm in the room at this point in the summer. The first night we slept okay, and every night thereafter the bed hasn’t been the problem
The Mrs. is pregnant right now, which for her means a world of sleeping problems, so we won’t really how well the mattress is going to work for her until the baby comes, but the backpain she was getting from our old mattress is now gone, so that’s an unqualified win.
Rotated it last weekend after the two week mark, and things didn’t feel much harder on the side we hadn’t been sleeping on, so maybe we haven’t fully broken it in, or the break-in won’t be nearly as bad as we initially worried about.
Another thing we were worried about was that we like to sit on the edge of the bed to put shoes on and get dressed etc., and this one doesn’t have any foam encasing around the edge, so it compresses really deeply making it easy to slip off. This has ended up being mostly a non-issue, though the Mrs. tells me she was just looking for a bench
Anyway, hopefully we’ll continue to have good results to report, but so far everything has been pretty much as good as we could have hoped for.
