S&F Jacalyn and Serta Wincroft. Newb to all of this, help a guy out!

After spending a weekend at the Wynn in Las Vegas the wife and I decided we needed a new mattress. After finding that the Wynn mattress is an exclusive to the Wynn hotel and it can only be purchased through them at a premium ($3000+) we decided to look for an alternate. We purchased a Stearns and Foster Jacalyn mattress from Mattress Firm about 30 days ago. Initially we both loved the softness of the mattress. We would sink right in and not wake until the morning. As time has passed, however, we both find ourselves beginning to toss and turn (moreso me than her). We still love the mattress, but it lacks that bit of firmness that the Wynn mattress had. This is a huge negative during sex, makes things quite difficult so we find ourselves on the floor. We got a pretty good deal on the mattress, box spring, and frame, paying around $2300 out the door including a mattress cover that you can pour a glass of water on and nothing gets through. We still sleep much better on this mattress than our previous mattress of eight years, and the 25 year warranty is pretty good as well.

Browsing Sam’s Club today we pulled out one of the mattresses and found it to be about the same as what we currently have, but a firmer core. I also found the almost $1000 less on the price tag appealing as well. The mattress is a Serta Perfect Sleeper Wincroft and also comes with the box springs, around $1200 delivered and set up. This mattress has a 20 year warranty, and Sam’s Club is awesome for returns for warranty purposes, not so sure about Mattress Firm. Both mattresses have independent coils, but the S&F mattress has a coil within a coil that is supposed to be more supportive.

Could any of the gurus here please give me some direction? I am quite busy and do not want to go through an endless cycle of mattress swaps. If I need to I will simply bite the bullet and purchase the Wynn bed.

Hi brockeverly,

Before considering any of the mattress you have mentioned … I would read post #1 here which has all the basic information, steps, and guidelines you will need to make a good purchase. Perhaps it will also help you avoid most of the worst choices such as the ones you are considering or other major brands or any mattress where you don’t know the quality of the materials that are inside it.

A mattress is only as good as its construction and the quality of the materials inside it and you can’t “feel” the quality of a mattress when you lie on it. Even the worst quality materials can feel very comfortable in a showroom of for a short while after a purchase but they soften and degrade much more quickly than higher quality materials (particularly in the upper layers of a mattress) and can more rapidly lose their initial comfort and support and require replacing (and foam softening isn’t covered by warranty).

Hotel mattresses are not any different from the regular mattresses sold in stores that use the equivalent lower quality materials except are often lower quality yet because they don’t have to be as durable as a consumer mattress because they don’t get used as much and are replaced more often. They also have a “premium” built into them so they are worse value even than a similar mattress without the hotel name attached to it. They will also often use toppers, mattress pads, or other bedding packages which contribute to how they feel as much as the mattress itself and can be more easily replaced when they wear out. In other words … hotel mattresses are among the worst “value” in a mattress and they are a common cause of buyers remorse fairly quickly after a purchase.

The only way to know the quality or value of a mattress is to know the details of all the layers inside it and it’s always better to deal with local manufacturers or smaller sleep shops who will provide you with the information you need to make meaningful quality and value comparisons, are much more knowledgeable about the mattresses they sell, and generally have much better quality and value mattresses at lower prices in any apples to apples comparisons than any of the larger national brands.
