After extensively researching major mattress brands, I’m more confused than ever. With a 12 year old, saggy mattress, I need to make a purchase rather soon. I tried the TempurPedics and am afraid they will be too heat retentive. The Serta icomfort sounds great and I have yet to try it out. I did try a mattress at Relax the Back that was a top layer of gel which promised to keep you cool all night. I have to admit, it felt great, but I wondered if it will stay that way all night long. Relax the Back offers a money back guarantee on TempurPedic, so there’s really nothing to lose. Before I make a $3000.00 investment and start exchanging mattresses, do you know about the other two brands or am I better off looking for a no-name mattress? I did read that buying from the major brands was not always the best thing to do. Thanks for the help!
Hi trekmall,
Unfortunately … there really is no way to “research” the major brands because they don’t provide the specs that makes meaningful assessments or comparisons of their mattresses possible. A mattress is only as good as the materials in it and without knowing the specifics of the foam especially, you are really researching who tells the best story or who has the best marketing rather than which has the best quality or value.
In those cases where you are able to dig out the quality specs of the materials … you will consistently find that they use the tyes of materials and foams that should be in lower priced mattresses.
This article may help you avoid most of the worst choices when you are mattress shopping and the futility of doing research on mattresses where what you discover has little meaning.
It can be much more effective to first put your efforts into researching the best outlets instead of the best mattress because this is the most likely way to find a higher quality and value mattress that better fits your needs and preferences over the long term. This article will give you an idea of how to know the type of outlet or manufacturer that is the best to work with when you are mattress shopping.
If you let me know the city or zip you live in I’d be happy to let you know of any of the better options I know of in your area.

ZedBed out of Canada is a great fit for you. No offgassing, VOC free a really good healthy option for foam typle products. Family owned business sold by a few in the US, 25 yr warranty (first 10 non prorated). I have been extra ordinarily impressed with them. Gold Bond Ecosense line rates very well also.
Will give these a try. Thanks!
My zip is 19002. Thanks.
