I am in research mode for a new mattress. Currently we are using Tempurpedix simplicity. Not a great one.
With lots of research on Internet and here, I have shortlisted Novosbed medium and MFC Presto memory foam. With the quality of the materials, price and Canadian shipping, these are the ones matching my preference. Can anyone please answer a few of questions on this regard?
How do they compare?
Are there any long term usage reviews of MFC Presto or Novosbed medium?
MFC site says Presto uses Cirrus memory foam and that’s the best. What is Cirrus memory foam? What’s the durability of these?
In FAQ section it says they use Aerus natural memory foam. It seems to be plant based Bio foam. Not sure which one is used in Presto? Cirrus or Aerus?
How do plant based foams compare with traditional memory foams( Visco elastic) in terms of comfort, hot sleeping and durability? Any long term review of plant based foams?
Sorry if I am repeating any questions which are already asked. There is too much info that I couldn’t go through, so here I am
There are far too many subjective quantities and individual preferences to be able to offer any sort of a reliable and accurate comparison for two mattresses. Two items that feel similar to one person can feel totally different to another, and the only way to compare would be through your own careful personal testing. Both items do use good quality and durable materials, as they break out on their web sites.
This site is not a review site, and even if it was, wear patterns can vary immensely depending upon the use of a mattress, the sleeping style and BMI of the individuals using the mattress, just for starters. To give yourself the best chance at success, you should always make sure that you find out the information listed here so you can compare the quality of the materials and components to the durability guidelines here to make sure there are no lower quality materials or weak links in a mattress that would be a cause for concern relative to the durability and useful life of a mattress before making any purchase. This would be your best way to make sure a product should hold shape longer than something using inferior componentry. Both the Novosbed and the MFC Presto use good quality componentry that would not be a concern for most individuals.
They state that it is “highest rated over hybrid and innerspring mattresses.” It is a 4 lb 12 ILD memory foam, and this would be a good quality material.
The Presto uses the Cirrus. Just to be clear, Areus Natural is a trademark – it is not “natural” memory foam (such a thing doesn’t exist). Many foams use polyols derived from natural materials to replace part of the petroleum-derived polyols in the foam production process. The Aerus is a 5lb memory foam used in other products. If you phone MFC (which I would strongly recommend you to do before making a purchase decision – the same with Novosbed), I believe they can offer to substitute the Aerus for the Cirrus, although I am not 100% sure (I thought someone on the forum had done this previously) and there would more than likely be a price difference.
In post #2 here I describe in more detail the use plant based polyols in polyfoam. In a nutshell, part of the polyol portion used to create polyurethane foam is replaced with a plant-based polyol. There’s a brief explanation of this from one of the polyol manufacturers here. If the memory foam is a good density, it would generally be durable.
MFC and is a member of this site which means that I think very highly of them and that I believe that they compete well with the best in the industry in terms of their quality, value, service, knowledge, and transparency. They are extremely knowledgeable, and I would strongly recommend a detailed phone conversation with either company before making any purchase decision.
On my research, I found this new mattress called Natural Sleep Concepts on Costco.ca. It seems the mattress uses interconnected individual beams of latex of 4" thick, in the comfort layer and 8" of Soy foam layers. The Costso website has a video of how the pressure balance (interconnected individual beams of latex) system works. It seems pretty interesting.
The mattress seems of have multiple certifications. It says Certipur also, but when I searched Companies Selling Products Containing Certified Foam - CertiPUR-US , I couldn’t find this there.
Also I found the company is a medical/ therapeutic bed/ foam manufacturer, which may be good, but there isn’t much info about this kind of latex mattress on their site. May be a brand new product.
This mattress seems to be a good value, if what they claim is true. 4" comfort latex and 8" support soy foam layers at $1349. But there is not much info on foam densities.
The Costco site has no manufacturer’s contact information.
Any idea about this mattress or what would be your opinion, since it is from Costco is it worth trying it and return if I don’t like?! Considering the MFC Presto has no return option, the mattress I am watching out, which has same price range of this one.
Any info/ guidance is highly appreciated!
There is very little information listed about their product, which would make this a very risky purchase, in my opinion. The design seems to be that of a poly foam core, above which is placed a layer of latex, with some sort of a “pod” construction, but they are anything but specific about how this is engineered. In their video, they state the latex has had proteins removed and it is GOLS certified (but no certificate number is listed) so this could be latex made using the Vytex process.
I would want to know more information about their foam core and who was producing it, as well as the latex, and the design, before even beginning to consider the product. If you are able to find out more information, feel free to post it back here and I’ll be happy to comment.
What an informative and insightful reply, Pheonix. Thank you for providing such a great to service to me. I totally agree with you in that. I felt the advertisement was a very interesting concept, but couldn’t find any supporting details. You confirmed my point.
I will try to get more info on that. But I haven’t found much contact info either.
Thank you.
I am finalizing to buy Presto mattress from MFC. But MFC owner Mario suggested that I should have HR foam core instead of HD foam core, because I have an adjustable base.
Mario suggested the new HR foam core would be 6" 2.5 HR foam ( 33 ild). He did not specify the new layer configuration – whether the new 6" layer will take the place of the 2" 3lb/ ft³ HR foam (30 ild) and 4" HD foam at 2lb. Assuming that it would, the new configuration would be, 2" 4lb/ft³ memory foam (12 ild), 2" 5lb latex (20 ild) as in original configuration, and 6" 2.5 HR foam (33 ild)
With this I am losing the 2" 3lb/ ftÂł HR foam (30 ild) and 4" 2lb HD foam ( 40 ild).
This customization will cost me about around $100. So not sure it is worth. Overall I am getting 6" 2.5lb HR foam, but I am losing a 2" 3 lb HR foam comfort/ transition layer.
It would be very much valuable for me, if you shed some light on this, is 6" 2.5 lb HR foam (33 ild) better option than the combination of 2" 3 lb HR foam(30 ild) and 4" 2 lb HD foam(40 ild) for the cost of upgrade?
Or is it better I stay with the original config? Although, I have an adjustable bases, we don’t use it frequently.
I’m guessing that with the power foundation they’ve found that people are better serviced with this thicker, higher density polyfoam core in both flexibility and durability.
The best resource for this would be Memory Foam Comfort. They have the experience and knowledge to know how their products perform in certain situations (like in an adjustable bed circumstance) and the suggestions they make are ones that they honestly think will result in the best comfort and performance for their customers. In this case, the overall net effect is more high density material, in one solid piece, but the more appropriate way to look at things is the applicability of the componentry for the situation.
I would suggest that you phone Mario with your specific questions. You can confirm the entire configuration, and also at that time I’m sure he’d be happy to explain the reasoning for his suggestion. I’m guessing it will have to do with the appropriateness of having a bit more substantial polyfoam core to put up with the demands and specific weight concentrations placed upon this mattress when used in a power bed configuration. You’re of course always welcome to choose whatever configuration you prefer, but in situations like this I would tend to strongly consider the advice of the manufacturer.
Thank you Phoenix. I called Mario and looks like only the core foam is replaced, it has all the layers as same as the original. So I pulled the trigger.
Now is the hard part… Waiting! Will update later when I get it. Thanks!
Congratulations on your new MFC mattress purchase! :cheer: I’m glad that you took the time to phone and receive complete specifications on the product before placing your order.
I’ll look forward to your comments once you’ve had your new mattress for a while.
