The foam is all from foam factory and the latex is from sleep on latex. I’m 200lbs and a side sleeper, wanted a firm base because I know from past overused mattresses I’ve had I really don’t like when my hips sink too much. With this current set up everything feel great except the very top of my arm at the shoulder. There’s too much pressure concentrated on about 2" of my arm there.
Is there anything I can do to alleviate that with the current layers I have, or should I try adding another inch or 2 of something? Also, as a side note, my girlfriend finds the mattress extremely comfortable, but she weighs much less and has narrower shoulders.
The fact that your girlfriend (lighter with narrower shoulders) finds it perfectly comfortable is a good sign that the overall support balance is solid. It just needs a touch more surface give for your build and sleeping position.
You’ve got a few low-cost tweaks you can try before adding more layers:
Swap layer order slightly Try moving the 2" memory foam layer above the 1" super soft polyfoam. That’ll let the memory foam contour more directly under your shoulder instead of being buffered by the softer poly. Sometimes that alone relieves the concentrated pressure.
Experiment with zoning If you have any leftover foam, you could cut a small shoulder “relief” zone just under that area by thinning the top foam slightly in the shoulder region (for your side only).
Add a thin topper only if needed If the change above doesn’t do it, a 1" soft polyfoam or memory foam topper (around 12–15 ILD or 3 lb density) should give you that last bit of pressure relief without throwing off your support.
And this is just an off-the-cuff recommendation based on my own side sleeping woes, but I have found that a loftier pillow helps a lot with everything neck and shoulder related.
Have you adjusted your pillows at all since you started with the DIY?
Wow, thank you for the in depth response @NikkiTMU. I will try the layer switch and will probably end up getting one more inch of cushion layer.
I haven’t switched pillows. My current pillow might be a little too tall for this mattress actually since my last mattress I didn’t really sink into much at all (yet somehow it was softer on my shoulder?) I have some other pillows so I can try that too, though I do really like my current pillow.
