Side sleeper about to DYI, please advise!

HI everyone, I’ve been reading for some time, and trying to place a order soon. Im 5’9 185, square shape mostly in the middle/shoulders. Fiance is 5’3 160, mostly in the hips. Both side sleepers, and sometimes I sleep on my stomach with no pillow. We currently have a Sleep Innovations 12" Mattress that is 11 years old. It has 2.5 and 9.5 layers, but I dont know the ILD. The mattress is medium-firm according to the description.

Why are we upgrading?

I sleep very hot, and we never used a mattress cover so its a bit stained. The comfort levels seem fine with this setup.

I was considering the following:

Latex Topper 3"
8" Elite Edge Pocket Coil
1" HD36 Foam

I’m wondering if i should be considering a transition layer, or if the selected products are less than ideal. The setup above comes out to a hair under $850 shipped.

Thank you

Hi LCO80.

A DIY can certainly be rewarding when approached with patience and a sense of adventure.

I think that given that you are both side sleepers, a transition layer can be useful. There are deeper gaps to “fill in” to spread your weight out on the mattress when you are sleeping on your side so side sleepers need a deeper cradle to relieve pressure so the gaps are filled in and help spread the weight over the mattress. But, you also don’t want to sink through your layers and into the coils.

That said, not everyone wants, needs, or likes the feel of a transition layer. You could try your configuration without it first, and then add one if you feel you need it.

What kind of encasement are you considering for your setup?

Thanks for the reply!
I purchased Percale sheets, and already, the past 2 days have been incredible. Maybe too cold (when I first lay on the bed).

That said, I purchased the following:

1" foam board
8" QE Coils
3" Soft Taylay
12" sleep on latex smooth topper cover.

I wanted to keep the setup simple (to reduce variables of concern…). Wondering if I should just buy a transition layer (I guess it wouldn’t Fit here)

Thanks Nikki, please see my previous response. I’m now wondering if I should proactively pick up a local transition layer for this setup. This way we can add it if things feel immediately off, or return it of not.

12" sleep on latex stretch cover
1" foam base
8" QE
3" Talay soft.

<30bmi side sleepers.

perhaps we can move the 1" base to (outside the encasement) and consider a 1-1.5" transition?

Hoping for any advice…

Hi LC080.

I am a big fan of transition layers; if it were me choosing between a 1" stabilization layer or a 1" transition layer, I’d choose the transition layer. Like you said, if you dislike it, you can return it OR you could use it instead as the base/stabilization layer under the coils if you dislike it as a transition layer.

HI LC080,

How did this turn out for you? Did you go with the 3 inches over 8 inch coils, or did you add a transition layer?
