Simmons Beautyrest Black vs Eclipse Conformatic Pillowtop

Hi, I am in a thorough need of some advice. I am 6’4", 209 lb guy, I sleep on my sides and back. I have had some bad problems with my lumbar spine, currently i have a Stearns and Foster Knightsbridge queen mattress that has sagged and makes it painful for me to sleep on it, especially on my back. Basically, i am looking for something that gives me best support in lumbar area.

Out of what’s available in major Department stores around me, i liked Simmons Beautyrest Black Abriana Extra Firm Mattress, which i could get for under $1500. I would, however, prefer something designed with lumbar support specifically in mind. Brands like Eclipse and Therapedic have zoned mattresses with different coil and quilt density in lumbar area which seems like a good idea. I am going around trying to find places to try these mattresses, but i am not sure that in terms of quality and durability they are comparable to Beautyrest, because they are considerably cheaper.

Here is what i know in terms of specs
Beautyrest

  1. Comfort Scale 2
    [li]Quilt - Top of Mattress
    1" Gel Touch
    1/2" Luxury Firm Comfort Foam
    Comfort - Padding Layers
    1/2" AirCool Memory Foam
    1 1/2" Energy Foam[/li]
    [li] Correct Back Support System
Coil System: Veriform Advanced Pocketed Coil, individually wrapped coil technology
    1/2" Energy Foam
    Coil Gauge: 13.5
    Ventilated AirCool Foam Encasement
    Coil Counts: Queen 850[/li]

Eclipse Conformatic Brussels Mattress Pillow Top

  1. [li] 858 Wrapped Pocketed Coils Innerspring Unit.
    7 Inch Double Edge Guards.
    Patented Spinal Zone Sleep System.
    [/li]
  2. Coirtex Insulator Pad. 1/2" Poly Fiber Upholstery Layer. 2" High Density Fiber-Flex Pad. 2" Convoluted Poly Foam Innertopper 3/4" 3LB. Visco Elastic Memory Foam. Patent Pending on Zoned Quilt Technology. Double Layers of Super Soft Foam and Dacron Quilting and Fire rated barrier. Imported Stretch Knit Damask Fabric.

Eclipse mattress claims to have Spinal Zone technology and Zoned Quilt technology that intend to address my main problem with lumbar alignment and support. Eclipse is also less than half price of Beautyrest. I am just wondering if i am missing some considerable advantages of Beautyrest in terms of quality and durability. It would be tremendously helpful if someone knowledgeable could comment and compare these.

Hi zerdna,

The first suggestion I would have is to read the tutorial post here which has all the basic information, steps, and guidelines you will need to make the best possible mattress choices. It will help you “reset” how you look for a mattress.

A mattress is only as good as its construction and the specific materials inside it and without knowing this information there is no way to make a meaningful assessment of the quality or durability of a mattress or compare it with other mattresses.

Both of the specs you listed only include very generic information about the materials used but has nothing about the quality of the foam materials in particular and to make this type of comparison you would need to know the thickness of every layer, the density of any memory foam or polyfoam (density is the single biggest part of the quality/durability of a foam material) and the type and density of any latex. I would also want more information about the number of coils and the coil gauges in each mattress even though the comfort layers are generally the weak link of a mattress not the innerspring unit.

Eclipse tends to be quite open about this (if your retailer calls the factory) but you will probably have great difficulty getting this information about any of the Simmons mattresses and Simmons is one of the manufacturers that I would tend to avoid unless you can get all the specific information you need to make an informed choice (which isn’t likely).
