single vs multiple layers

Just got off the phone with KTT, where the person said that two 1" layers of a topper will feel the same as a 2" layer.
On this site I have read differently.

My guess is that for the two layers to act separately, they would have to slip relative to each other. Perhaps with latex foam sheets, the friction between them is great enough such that they don’t slip? In that case, they may as well be glued together. In that case, it may as well be a single sheet.

Thoughts?

Hi beanbag,

For most people they are probably correct but in “theory” separate layers will act more independently and be a little softer (whether they slip over each other or not) because the top layer isn’t “holding up” the lower layer with stretched foam that “wants” to spring back and resist compression and the edges of each layer will pull in a little more as well and resist pressure less (like a pillowtop which is also a little softer than the same materials inside a cover).

If the layers are glued it would eliminate the difference and if both layers were inside a tight cover then the effect would be reduced as well.

While many people wouldn’t have the sensitivity to feel the difference … it would be a little softer and you would sink in a little more deeply if the layers were unglued.
