:

All layers arrived in perfect condition. No tears or stains and clearly marked with a label instead of permanent marker.
Very slight latex odor. Much less than expected.
Cotton/Wool cover excellently crafted including a heavy duty zipper.
One minor flaw: a short run in the cotton fabric that we chose to repair by hand stitching.

Venting

After layering the latex together we decided to allow one hour of fresh air to ventilate
the latex prior to zipping on the cotton/wool cover.

Pillows.
Along with the generous Memorial Day sale price and MU 5% discount, we choose the queen size pillows.

Hi PapaMike,

Thanks for taking the time to share your experience and feedback about your SleepEZ mattress … I appreciate it.

As you know I think you made a great quality/value choice … and congratulations on your new mattress

I’m also looking forward to your ongoing comments when you’ve had the chance to sleep on it for a bit as well.

Phoenix

We were skating with grandkids so the mattress and top cover had plenty of time to air out.
Barely noticeable latex odor while finishing the bed.

Cover

Cover fit nice and tight. Tight top.
Heavy duty zipper pulled it all together

Configuration

Soft - Soft
Med - Med
Firm - Firm

Initial Feel

Comfortable! It feels like all pressure points, shoulders and hips are absorbed with just the right amount of support and firmness. I’ll have more to report after a luxurious nights sleep.

First Night Assessment

Cool Sleep

We’re happy to report that we slept cool. The retired innerspring orthopedic was always stuffy hot for us.

Falling Asleep

We initially thought falling asleep on a new (strange) mattress might be a challenge.
It wasn’t. The comfort level was like melatonin to our brain. Or maybe it was the 3 hours of skating with grandchildren. Ha!

How was our first night?

We slept well and are refreshed and rested with no aches or pains. I don’t think my wife moved from her right side all night. On the firm innerspring, she experienced shoulder and hip discomfort. No discomfort with this mattress.

First night assessment.

A-

We’re looking forward to revisiting our new bed tonight and I’m sure we’ll have more to share as time passes.

One thing we didn’t notice last night was the seam. I think the well fitted cover holds all the layers snug.

I’m back. Rested and feeling well after the second night of sleep. If it takes time to adjust to a new mattress, it looks like our adjustment will be a quick, pleasant experience.

Pillows

Pillows do matter. We’re using the new pillows provided by SleepEZ with 4 cups of the fill removed.
We’re side sleepers. We’ll be evaluating the pillows since they are an important aspect of good sleep.

Hi PapaMike,

Thanks for the ongoing feedback … and it’s great to hear that so far your new mattress is working out so well for you

I couldn’t agree more with you that pillows are a very important part of a sleeping system and can make a significant difference in your overall alignment and how well you sleep.

Layer Change

After 5 nights testing.

This morning I decided to swap the soft to middle and medium to top to get a medium/soft feel. The wife’s side remains the same, soft/med/firm… We’re going to take turns testing the medium/soft feel versus the soft/medium feel. I think I’m going to like the medium soft. The change is definitely noticeable.

The split configuration is going to make this an interesting sleep experiment. We both like the ease of making choices.

Update: Pillows

I realized after initial test, my pillow will need a bit more fill to increase the loft from 5.5" to 6". The medium/soft makes a big difference, lifting my shoulders and requiring a bit more head support.

.

Update

I’ve been away, enjoying my sleeps on the SleepEZ mattress.

The layer change to medium/soft/firm didn’t work for me. It kept me awake most of the night. For me, the soft layer over firmer support layer is a must.
Since then I’ve been sleeping on the soft/firm/medium arrangement and my body finds it very comfy on top, and superior support below. I was surprised to find the firm layer working so well that close to my body.

Since June 2, I’ve had no pressure point issues or sleeplessness.

Need more info.

I need to investigate leaving the medium on bottom. Will it last through the warranty when placed on the slats and supporting the top two layers? I’ve seen it demonstrated as an option at the SleepEZ site, but I’ve also seen the Soft on bottom in the demo which doesn’t make sense to me. So, I need to gather more info on how the support layers pile up to give me that best feel, comfortable, long lasting support I’m seeking.

The other side.

My wife is extremely happy with her soft/medium/firm and isn’t interested in any changes. The good news is, if she does want a different feel later, our split mattress will provide that option at no additional cost.

Hi PapaMike,

Thanks for sharing another update

While a manufacturer would normally be the best source of information for these types of questions … having the medium on the bottom won’t affect the durability or the useful life of the mattress or your warranty.

Update

I’m still sleeping on the soft/firm/medium. It’s the best comfort level for me. Wife is still on soft/med/firm.

Re: slipping or rising seam?

I have a simple, inexpensive solution ($1…39) that fixes it. I’ll photograph the modification and submit it later.

For some who have back or support complaints after a new mattress purchase, please be sure it’s not a spinal issue that a mattress/pillow won’t fix. It’s not a bad idea to get a spinal exam and X-ray whenever your back aches or causes other discomfort.

Hi PapaMike,

I couldn’t agree with you more and it’s always worth repeating that a mattress or a pillow isn’t a way to “fix” an underlying physiological or health issue although a suitable mattress can certainly help to minimize or reduce some symptoms or help prevent them from getting worse while someone is working on the underlying cause of their symptoms.

I’m looking forward to hearing about your suggestion

You’re preaching to the choir, brother!

There are so many more variables involved with our bodies as they relate to good sleep as opposed to what the mattress brings to the equation. People often have unrealistic expectations of what a good mattress can accomplish.

When you have pre-existing health issues and don’t address them, the best we can hope for is that the mattress will not exacerbate those existing conditions. The ability of a mattress alone to heal (aside from providing a good environment that is conducive to restoration) is minimal. But when combined with diet, exercise and lifestyle choices, a new mattress can have a tremendous positive impact.
