We are looking to switch out our old latex mattress for a newer and larger bed. Our current mattress is a Dreamfoam Ultimate dream latex (medium); the level of firmness just states medium = 28 ILD. We love the bed but wouldn’t mind it if it was slightly firmer. It is eight years old and starting to sag on one side.
I believe the specs are:
-1.5 Inches of Reflex Foam
-3 inches Talalay latex comfort layer
-5.5 inches of 1.8 lb/ft.Âł high-density polyfoam core
Me: 5’9" 165 lbs - back and side sleeper. Tend to like medium/firm beds. Sleeps hot.
Her: 5’1" 105 lbs - back and side sleeper. Likes medium beds.
We both toss and turn a lot throughout the night, we do not like the in-active and stuck feeling of a memory foam mattress.
Other beds that we have tested and liked the firmness are:
- Tempurpedic ProBreeze medium hybrid
- Serta CF2000 Firm
We are looking to purchase the SleepEZ 10" in a king size (should the 13" be considered?) The recommendation I received from SleepEZ was a split build 10" organic latex-
Her: soft Talalay / medium Dunlop / medium Dunlop.
Me: soft Talalay / Medium Dunlop / firm Dunlop.
SleepEZ soft talalay is 19-22 ILD. I’m worried about sinking in too much? Also considering just keeping it simple and not doing the split since the wife generally sleeps in the middle and me at the edge lol.
Hi equalme.
Welcome to our Mattress Forum.
When looking at the specs of your existing mattress, I can say with some confidence that you’ll be getting a firmer feel from the SleepEZ build. You could swap out that top layer for a medium talalay if you find it too soft/sinky for your liking, but you’ll be sinking into the dunlop which tends to feel a bit firmer than talalay due to its composition.
If you had extreme support needs or required a thicker mattress, then 13" would be fine to consider but for your heights and weights, 10" is perfect.

Well you were right lol, the SleepEZ setup is firmer than my old mattress, and I’m not sure if I like that. I ended up with soft Talalay / Medium Dunlop / firm Dunlop. It is comfortable when sleeping on my back, but it is wrecking my shoulders when side sleeping. I feel like my shoulder is not able to sink in enough? I wake up throughout the night because the arm I am laying on goes numb.
Hi again,
I was thinking about it and maybe swapping out the medium dunlop for a medium talalay may help to allow for better shoulder/arm sinkage. Is that something you’d be able to try out?

Hi Equalme. Any changes for you? I am curious because I am considering a medium dunlop or talalay for my middle layer in a DIY mattress.

That might be my next step. I spoke with SleepEZ and they had me try swapping out the firm dunlop base layer with the medium dunlop (soft-T/medium-D/medium-D). Much better on the shoulder for side sleeping, but now I feel like my mid back is sinking in when laying flat. Also I feel like my body is still getting used to the increased resistance of the full latex compared to my old mattress which was a sort of hybrid? (comfort foam / latex / polyfoam base).
Sorry for the late reply. See above. For the most part, I think I like the soft talalay / medium dunlop / firm dunlop setup more than the soft/medium/medium. I wonder if adding a 1.5" memory foam layer on that of that might do the trick.
Hi equalme.
Yes, most people need about 90 days to adjust to their new mattress - it’s worth giving your configuration some time to see if you just need to wait through the break-in period. However, the sinking lower back does sound problematic. Are you still experiencing that?

Yes, more so mid back area. I am waking up with pretty bad upper back/shoulder/neck pain (I do have chronic pain/tightness to my right scapula from previous injury). Also when laying in bed, I feel like my body cannot relax due to the constant pressure / pushback from the latex. I went to lay on a Winkbed today and it was actually very comfortable minus the bulky pillowtop.
