Hi Phoenix & fellow latex enthusiasts,
I am excited to report that I finally tracked down a local all-latex mattress company/manufacturer. Not a TMU member I believe, though it has been mentioned before - Churchill Smith in Santa Barbara/Ventura.
Before this I’ve only ever tried latex hybrids in stores but I finally tested a 3" talalay soft 19ILD topper in a stretchy cotton knit (the Winston) over 6"-8" all latex mattresses in firm and medium ( dunlop/dunlop and talalay combo).
All were comfy and 3" soft talalay topper in stretchy cotton is the way to go!
Note: I’m looking at toppers first because I do not like quilted wool covers, they have them at the store and it really isn’t the feel I want under my body for heat and firmness reasons. Thus I’m trying to find latex combos that prioritize a stretchy knit cover without the added cost of a quilted wool cover we’ll never use.
I’m not sure where to go next, unfortunately. The Winston King soft topper price is comparable to online and I really liked Spencer the owner and would prefer to buy from him. However, a King 6" solid Dunlop all-latex companion mattress in a cotton stretchy knit (custom built) is double what I can buy online from Sleeplikeabear or APM https://sleeplikeabear.com/collections/dunlop-latex-mattress-toppers/products/6-inch-latexgreen-all-natural-dunlop-latex-mattress-topper-support-core?variant=15572806795373 and All Natural and Blended Latex Cores, Latex Mattress Toppers and Cores, All Products,
I’m wondering if I could perhaps get 2 pieces of (separately zip covered in stretchy cotton knit) 3" toppers from this local company, one in soft talalay and medium or firm Dunlop and use them on top of each other, encased in a mattress protector? Should I be aware of any drawbacks of sleeping on them separately encased but zipped within a mattress protector? (I’m 5’4c" 130 lbs, primarily side + some back, DH is 5’10, 168lbs side and back.)
Alternatively I could try to see if Spencer would be willing to encase these 2 x 3" layers in a single stretchy knit cover for cheaper than the 6" mattress he quoted. There is probably some custom component to this and I don’t want to lowball a local retailer-manufacturer, as I understand there’s overhead but if he’s able to come closer to online prices I’d much rather support someone local.
Any tips on how I should handle/ approach this? Thanks much!
