Both my wife and I are in our mid-50s and slowly losing weight and keeping it off. I’ve been at it for 3 years and her since November 2016. I’m 6’4" and presently 240 pounds (down 35 pounds) and headed to 215. She’s 5’9" 215 pounds and headed to 160. We know weight can be an important factor in selecting a mattress and are concerned it’ll complicate our selection. We expect to arrive at our weight goal within the next 18 months.
Problem is we need a new mattress now! We both are thinking we need to get a mattress that provides
support for our current needs but will also works well when we arrive at our weight goal.
So we lean towards softer layers not only for the stated reasons above but because I’ve got pressure points on my hips and she simply has a natural tendancey towards a softer mattress. We both are side sleepers for the most part.
We’ve gathered information from your site and others, and visited several mattress stores. Two of these stores sell latex, At Savvy Rest we were able to conclude that a split Serenity 10" queen would work. I selected Med Talalay, Med Talalay, and base of Firm Dunlop and found it worked the best. It gave both good side and stomach support with pressure point relief. She found that Soft Talalay, Med Talalay, and a base of Firm Dunlop felt best. All layers a 3 inches thick.
We may very well purchase from Sleep-Ez (Organic Select 10"), if they can provide an equivalent. We very much likes the adjustable bed support systems at the stores we visted and will likely return to purchase one for our new Latex mattress.
Congratulations on your weight loss! The fact that you’re keeping it off is all the more impressive.
Yes, your mass (along with body type, sleeping style and alignment needs, to name just a few things) all will have an impact upon mattress selection. The good news is that if you choose quality materials that are durable for a higher mass, they certainly will be durable enough for you as you lose weight, although you may end up desiring to change the overall plushness of the product. Component-style systems are popular for people in your situation, as you can adjust a comfort layer if needed down the road as you reach your final weight goals.
SleepEZ is familiar with the Talalay and Dunlop latex offered by Savvy Rest, and if you provide them your configurations they will be able to use their familiarity with the Coco Latex (Dunlop) and Radium (Talalay) used by Savvy Rest to approximate something for you. SleepEZ is a site member here and I do think highly of their expertise in areas like this. Whether you chose a Savvy Rest or a SleepEZ, both mattresses would work well with an adjustable base system.
That is the one question I can’t answer for you, as the number one rule is that nothing can supplant your own personal testing and experience, as there are far too many unknown variable and personal preferences involved for me to be able to discern if your choices are too soft or not. The good news is that you’ve been able to test these configurations in person.
I can speak generally that the Mt/Mt/Fd configuration wouldn’t be out of the range for someone of your mass, and even for your eventual smaller mass. Going with Talalay over Dunlop in the upper layers will allow for a bit more conformation and buoyancy, which you may find even more comfortable as you lose more weight.
For your wife, she has selected a very popular progressive design (St/Mt/Fd) which at her current mass some might refer to as a bit soft, but as you mentioned she does prefer a softer level of comfort. The nice thing about a component system is that if she desires a bit more surface firmness, you can choose to swap the positon of the plush and medium Talalay layers (using the more “dominant” medium Talalay on top), and if she desires a bit more plushness as she loses more weight, you could go back to the original configuration with the soft Talalay on top.
Overall, you’re considering good quality componentry, and while I know it’s difficult to “hit a moving target”, the configurations you’ve arrived at are not “unreasonable” in a general sense.
I’ll be interested to learn about any further items you’re considering or questions you may have.
Thanks for the encouragemnent! The weight took a long term to put on, so it’s gonna take time to come off.
I just ordered from Sleep-ez at lunchtime . Got exactly what I mentioned before.:st,mt,fd for her and mt,mt, fd for me. Shawn answered and confirmed our thinking about my needs. He’s going to use radium talalay for both tops and Silr Lanka dunlop in firm for the bottoms (38-40 ild).
Shawn felt we may have an adjustment period but to give it some time(several weeks) particularly if our current mattress has body impressions. It does. He said they are there for us and ready to make layer exchanges during the trail period…
Should be getting it next week. TIime will tell.
Thanks again for the thoughtful and thorough reply! You’re providing a great service here!
Congratulations on your new mattress purchase! You certainly made a good quality/value choice. I’m glad you took the time to phone and were able to confirm your choices.
This is very correct – the adjustment period is what I term a period of retrogression, much like starting a new exercise program. You may be uncomfortable for a few weeks, but avoid the temptation to immediately start mixing layer combinations and instead allow yourself to adjust to the new mattress (and for the mattress to adjust to you).
Yesterday, our new Sleep-Ez Organic Select 10 inch thick mattress arrived in 3 boxes, the heaviest being 59 pounds. I easily moved the 3 tall boxes into the bedroom having pre-arranged with Fedex Home Delivery for side door delivery. Sleep-Ez took the extra step of providing handle openings near the top of each box to help.
Everything was well packed with undamaged, heavy walled cardboard on the outside, and multiple layers of tightly packed clear plastic on the inside for those many layers of rolled Dunlop and Talalay latex, Unfurlling was fairly easy as we ran the sissors along the tiny gap left at the end of the roll without nicking the highly compressed latex.
The Sleep-Ez Mattress cover is well constructed and each layer was clearly marked as to it’s firmness. We were fortunate enough to get the quality made MySheet Queen sheet Set and two Queen Latex pillows included for free with our purchase.
So how was the first night on the new latex mattress?
My wife felt the mattress was “perfect” and I didn’t wake once! We both were well rested the next day. I found particular comfort on my back as the mattress fully engaged my lumbar area providing good relief not experienced on the old mattress. I was even able to sleep for a bit on a previously sore pressure point on my left hip as the mattress didn’t elicit any pain in this area. Moving to the very edge didn’t result in a sense of falling out of bed, as the edge support was sufficient to the task and allowed us to use the full surface of the bed.
Nothing bad to report. The resiliencey of the top two Talalay layers gave a bouncy sensation that I didn’t fully expect but quickly found it to be a non-issue. My wife actually enjoyed the sensation after she settled-in with the mattress. It didn’t translate to disturbing the other in any case as the sensation is ever so slight and now, for me, nearly forgotten. Also, sitting on the edge was not the chair like feel experienced with my old innerspring mattress, but certainly adequate for putting on socks in the morning.
We’re going to need many nights to fully evaluate the mattress. I’ll update if we make any layer changes or devolpe any issues. As for now, we’re very happy with the sellection we made. Thanks again for your help!
