Softness/firmness and alignment

This evening I went back to Original Mattress Factory to test (once again) their Serenity memory foam and latex mattresses to determine which I liked best.

While there, I asked the salesperson how one might determine if a mattress is too soft or too firm to provide the correct alignment. I was a bit surprised when he said that how soft or firm a mattress is has nothing to do with alignment, and that any new mattress will provide good alignment. I said that I was concerned about whether I might sink into a mattress too far, or perhaps not enough, thus throwing off my spinal alignment, and he once again said that any new mattress will provide proper alignment, though some coil mattresses might have pressure points, and that you really just pick whatever feels most comfortable.

This sounds totally contrary to what I’ve read here. Is what he told me completely off base, or am I misinterpreting what I’ve read. I thought that the softness/firmness and thickness of the layers affected how far you would sink in (along with things like weight and curviness) and were a factor in whether your body is properly aligned (along with whether you sleep on your side or back or stomach).

Hi a2dox,

Yes … it’s completely off base. Most of the salespeople at OMF (or any good retailer or manufacturer) would know better but unfortunately there are always exceptions.
