Spindle Mattress -- Thanks to this forum, I found nirvana (reasonably priced) in bed

I’m so glad I stumbled onto this forum. Without it, I would have spent thousands of $$ that i didn’t have to spend, and I doubt I would be sleeping any more soundly than I am right now. I’ll send a small donation shortly.

A little backstory: I wanted to buy a latex bed the last time my husband and I went mattress shopping. We live in New England and bought our last spring mattress from Jordan’s Furniture. I tried and fell in love with a latex product there 8 years ago but couldn’t convince my husband to try something so “radical.” He was convinced, however, to go in a different direction after seeing how badly our very expensive mattress sagged after only 8 years.

First stop, was Jordan’s again. They carry a brand called PranaSleep, but they’re not very forthcoming about what’s actually inside the very firm mattress that we liked best. I also didn’t like the price tag of about $4600, which included a foundation they absolutely insisted I would need.

I found some other reputable brick-and-mortar stores courtesy of this forum and we found another mattress made by GreenSleep that we liked a lot. It was their highest-end product, with 3 layers plus an integrated topper. It was a beautiful product to look at (gorgeous velour covering), exceedingly comfortable, and we appreciated that the owner of the store was knowledgeable about the product and not pushy. But the retail price of that mattress was around $4400. We tried mattresses at many other stores, but none were what we were looking for, and prices were really no better.

We considered purchasing from an online mattress manufacturer, and I called several with questions. For the most part, I found the telephone sales reps to be less than helpful. It didn’t instill confidence in me to be buying an expensive item that I had to sleep on every night sight unseen and with so little help to go on. In desperation, I turned back to this forum and found Spindle Mattress, which is located less than an hour from my house.

In short, purchasing from Spindle was a fantastic decision. I ended up with an amazing bed at an incredible price of less than $1600 for a queen (included a topper, and the Underground discount), and one of the best customer service experiences of my life. I absolutely was able to replicate the “feeling” I got from the $4400 GreenSleep mattress using 3 firm layers of Dunlop latex from Spindle, plus their medium topper.

Marketing Director Kim Novick knew everything about his company’s product and was extremely hands-off when it came to making the sale, which I appreciated. Moreover, even though there was an order backlog, he managed to get my new mattress to me in just 2 days when I mentioned my very sore back and inability to sleep on my old mattress. And even though nobody wants to have a “problem” when they buy something, it’s often a fact of life, and it’s how a company handles the problem that makes all the difference. In this case, one of the layers we received was the wrong firmness. Spindle responded immediately to my call and I received the correct layer the very next day. FedEx was also sent to my home to pick up the incorrect layer.

And while this mattress doesn’t have the fancy velour covering with the hand tufting of the GreenSleep product, I could not care less. The mattress is hidden beneath our sheets most of the time anyway. My husband and I are enjoying the soundest, most comfortable sleep I’ve had in my life – and my bank account is happy, too.

Hi eohippus,

Thanks for taking the time to share such detailed comments and feedback about your experience with Spindle Mattress … and for your kind comments about the site as well … I appreciate them!

As you know I think very highly of Spindle and it’s great to hear that your experience there was just as good as so many of the other forum members that have purchased from them.

Most importantly … congratulations on your new mattress

You certainly made a great quality/value choice and I’m looking forward to any additional updates you have the chance to share once you’ve had the chance to sleep on it a little longer as well.

PS: Thank you for the donation which I also just noticed … I appreciate it as well!

I just want to echo eohippus comments as we had the exact same experience. I posted this info in another older post, but to quickly summarize.

We discovered Latex at Jordan’s furniture and liked the Pranasleep brand, but the king cost @ $5400. After finding this website and discovering Spindle mattress was in Acton, MA we stopped by on Martin Luther King Day.

We met with Kim Novick who was very friendly and we explained that as side sleepers we were currently sleeping on a mattress that was too hard. The Spindle showroom has 4 beds (extra firm, firm, medium and soft) We were leaning towards a medium firm mattress, but I wanted to make sure that we would have enough support. I also mentioned that what I had liked about the Pranasleep was the “pillowtop” softness it provided. Kim recommended we try out another option: a medium mattress topper on a firm mattress. It was exactly what I was looking for - a soft/plush feel while having good overall support. The topper comes in a really nice organic cotton cover.

We have been sleeping on it since late Jan 2016 and are very happy with our choice. It was not difficult to set up - we had the same reaction that it the latex layers would not fit in the mattress cover, but they all did. Make sure to set it up on the bed frame you plan to use as the mattress is heavy. My husband even put additional support under the center bar of our king frame.

What is also great about the mattress is that the mattress cover has wool batting, a natural fire retardant. We experienced no odor / off gassing. My husband really likes that you know exactly what is in your mattress as you put the layers together.

I did not expect to become such a huge fan of Spindle, but I never expected to own a bed that is so comfortable and wonderful to sleep on.

Hi smiles_cc,

Thanks for taking the time to share an additional update … I appreciate it

It’s great to see that your choice worked out so well for you and now that you have slept on your mattress for a couple of months and you are past the break in and adjustment period it would be reasonable to expect that you will be sleeping well for many years to come.
