Does anyone have experience with ordering a latex mattress online and the size being less than the standard size? Standard king mattress size is 76 X 80. I was finally ready to order online after many months of research and was told that they âcannot guarantee the size as all mattresses have a slight variance. It could be ½-1 inch smaller than the specified dimensions because of the rounded edges of a mattress.â Because of the new platform bed I have and the size of the panels, 1" smaller would leave a big gap, even taking blankets into consideration.
I am seeking a site that sell mattress where the latex is produced in the USA, like from Latex International.
Hi cpcrn, I think itâs a pretty standard disclaimer. Foam (either poly or latex) is a flexible material and even with controlled production line cutting the material can flex some. Even âregularâ mattresses like innersprings with flat or pillowtops can vary slightly. If itâs 1" smaller (assuming the higher difference) overall that would translate to 1/2" at either side or top/bottom. That shouldnât be an overly large gap and sheets and blankets will more than likely make up that 1/2" (1/4" if the size is only 1/2" off).
To give a for instance, I just took a ruler to my hand. Half an inch is narrower than the thickness of my index finger. Obviously everyone has different size hands so that may mean very little but I donât have overly large hands either. I think youâll find similar from a number of sites or vendors. If it were 2-3" difference it may leave a large gap and become questionable but I wouldnât worry too much. A one sided pillowtop for instance has rounded edges and provides a smaller usable sleeping surface than the bottom occupies where latex mattresses are more squared off unless itâs a type of latex base with a plush or pillowtop type ticking.
Hi cpcrn,
Mattress sizes can vary between manufacturers and even with the same manufacturer because of the nature of soft materials and fabrics and how they are cut and the effect of the cover both in terms of its thickness (a mattress that uses a cover that is 1/2" thicker will be 1" wider than another mattress that uses a thinner cover with the same layers and materials inside it) and how much the tightness of the cover compresses or or âpulls inâ the layers inside it. Mattresses for example that have tighter covers can have a smaller top surface dimensions than a mattress that has a looser cover. If you measure a mattress from seam to seam across the top the width or length may be different compared to measuring the same mattress at the widest point of the side panels. In other words a mattress doesnât have a perfectly rectangular shape. There is more about this in post #3 here as well (which I had to edit because some of the dimensions changed since I wrote it) but a variance of =/- 1" would be ânormalâ in the industry.
A Serta âstandardâ king size is 76" x 79.5" +/- 1/2"
A Sealy âstandardâ king size is 76" x 79" +/- 1/2" to 1"
A Simmons âstandardâ king size is 76" x 79.5" +/- 1/2"
While you may be restricting your options for high quality latex by only considering latex that is made in the US (all the molded Dunlop and all the organic latex you will find for example is made outside of the US and Radium Talalay is a high quality Talalay latex made in Holland) ⌠the three latex manufacturers that make latex in the US are Talalay Global (formerly Latex International) which makes 100% natural and blended Talalay latex, Latexco which makes blended continuous pour Dunlop, and Mountaintop Foam which makes a range of continuous pour Dunlop that varies from all synthetic to 100% natural and various blends of both. You would need to ask each mattress manufacturer or retailer you are considering which type and blend of latex they use in their mattresses or where the latex is made because itâs very common that a mattress manufacturer will change their supplier from one to the other from time to time.
Pure Latex Bliss is one example of a mattress manufacturer that only uses US made Talalay since they are owned by Talalay Global but there would be many other manufacturers that do as well and some will have latex mattresses where some latex layers are made in the US and some are made elsewhere.
