Hi again,
Last Friday, I was able to find a company who could get me the Pacific Rim platform bed frame in less than two weeks instead of 4-10 weeks… I ended up going with the extra slats, which was only $30 more, to make it 1 1/2" gaps, as recommended by Flexus Comfort. I also added a support leg. The support system is set and I believe very sturdy.
Now, on to a mattress!! I called Flexus Comfort to find out their opinion on what I would set up they felt I would need before I ordered my bed frame. I also wanted to get some information regarding their recommendation for a latex mattress, 3 layers, 3" each layer. I explained that I was a side and stomach sleeper, sleeping more on my stomach. We talked about my weight and height. The person I spoke to said that I would do best with a S, M, F combo (Firm on bottom). I questioned the amount of support I would have being more of a stomach sleeper. I was told that 90% of people do best with a soft layer on top. During the conversation, I sort of felt like the person was not really willing to have a long conversation with me regarding the different possibilities to set up the ideal mattress combination for my needs. It could have been that I said up front that I might have to wait a few weeks to purchase a mattress since at that time I still thought it would take at least a month to get the bed frame I was interested in or it could have been that it was towards the end of the day and maybe the person I was speaking to did not have a lot of time or it could have just been my perception of the phone call. Regardless, although I do know that Flexus Comfort is a good company, I just did not feel that my needs were being carefully considered.
On Saturday, I called SleepEZ and spoke to Robin. She was great! We spoke in depth about many different possibilities and combinations. At first she suggested a M, M, F set up (F on bottom) but then thought maybe the S, M, F combo might be better because of my side sleeping. I would love it if I can find my perfect combination the first try but the more I though about it, with a S, M, F combo and split sides, I would have a lot of different combinations I could try to find what would work the best.
I brought up the question if a 2" of a soft top layer might be a little better than 3" soft top layer since I do sleep more on my stomach. The problem though would be if the soft layer did not end up being the top layer if I needed to switch them. Also, so many people now get 12" of latex/4 layers and with 3 layers and one being 2", I wonder if I would be making a mistake.
The primary reason I have been looking at a 10" mattress vs a 13" mattress is that it is much easier when getting sheets to fit and I have a mattress cover that will fit this size mattress. I am wondering now if that’s silly and maybe a 12" mattress is what I should be looking at instead with that top layer being 2".
The other thing we talked about was talalay vs dunlop layers. By the end of the conversation, I was leaning towards the bottom firm layer being dunlop and the other two layers being talalay. Robin did say that all three layers being talalay would also work fine but for some reason, I just though I would need that bottom layer to be dunlop since it was on the bottom. After doing a little more research, I am now leaning towards all three layers being talalay. I am also leaning towards the 100% natural talalay latex for all three layers.
I am thinking of driving down to Denver on Thursday. Of the stores you recommended, do your know of any of the stores feature latex mattresses with all of the layers being talalay latex? I realized that the few mattresses I have tried so far were all mattresses with dunlop latex. I think it would be very helpful for me to feel a mattress with all talalay layers. Even though that mattress would not be identical to a mattress I would be ordering online, it would help me with my decision.
I also brought up the issue I read about on this forum with some of the wool in the mattress covers bunching up. Robin said that SleepEZ is in the process of talking to the people who make the covers and they are working on a solution. Robin also told me about the option of the mattress cover without the wool, but being in the mountains of Colorado in the winter and just moving from Hawaii, any extra warmth I can get in a bed will be welcome! Hopefully the issue with the wool bunching up will be solved before I order my mattress if I do go with SleepEZ. I still want to call FloBeds before making my decision, I just did not have time today. I feel very confident ordering from SleepEZ, but I also think I should still pursue all options and get one more opinion on the best combination of layers.
I have been doing hours and hours of research on this site. Thank you again Phoenix for all the time you have put into this site as well as to everyone else that has posted. This website is so helpful!
I read something today on another website saying that talalay is glued and it can sometimes be felt? Is that true? I have not read that here.
Do you think i am on the right track? I would like to order my mattress next week so that it will arrive soon after my bed frame. I am really looking forward to sleeping in a regular bed again and pulling the plug on the blow up mattress I have been using.
I welcome any suggestions or other helpful tips. Thank you.
