I recently purchased S&F Lux Estate Luxury Firm mattress which turned out to be too soft and uncomfortable.
I am looking to return it and came across this forum, which btw is amazing source of information.
Equipped with new knowledge I went to look at http://scottjordan.com/alpine-1/
The mattress is great but can not find it on the Berkeley ergonomics site. the site has 3 models that match.
Does anyone know what scottjordan sells?
I found similar mattress at UrbanNatural. Is this the same mattress?
Also, can anyone comment on the quality of the mattress?
Different BE retailers may have different names for the same mattress but I believe that both the Alpine/Oslo (I believe this should be the Alpine but they list both names) at Scott Jordan and the Madison Interactive at Urban Natural would be the same as the Interactive on the Berkeley Ergonomics site. Other BE stores may use other names yet. You can match their mattresses based on the specifics of the components inside them.
Having said that … there are different firmness options available for the same mattress so one may still be different from the other depending on the components and layers in the specific mattress you are testing.
All the BE mattresses use high quality and durable materials and components (European pocket coil systems, microcoils, 100% natural Talalay latex, and organic zip cotton covers quilted with organic wool) and there are no low quaility materials or weak links in any of them.
Each mattress will have a unique combination of materials and components and even small differences between mattresses can have a surprising effect on how it feels and performs in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) so the only way to know which one may feel similar to you (regardless of whether it would feel similar to someone else because this type of comparison would be subjective) would be based on your own testing or personal experience.
The better options or possibilities I’m aware of in the New York City area (subject to the guidelines here) are listed in post #2 here. I don’t know the specific mattresses that each of them carry on their showroom floor (that would be more than anyone could keep up with for the hundreds of forum lists across the country in a constantly changing market) but if you are specifically interested in an innerspring/latex hybrid then you can check their websites or call them to see if they have any of this general type of mattress in their showroom before you pay them a visit.
They are in a similar category (pocket coil/latex hybrid) but they have a different design. They use a different coil system and the latex is Dunlop not Talalay so the mattress would most likely feel and perform quite differently from the BE. Every mattress category will have a wide range of firmness levels and different components and mattress designs that can be very different from each other even though the materials may be similar.
No … not yet. The membership list is here. I’ve talked with Ali and he is certainly knowledgeable and helpful and carries good quality mattresses but they are a little too new in business to add to the membership list for just a little bit yet. Having said that … he did offer to provide a 5% discount to the members here. ADDED: They are now a member of the site as well.

Unfortunately sales rep at SJ was not very knowledgeable and prices he estimated are completely off base compared to Urban Natural.
Can you explain the role hight of the mattress plays in the support, comfort or longitivtiy?
The BE Interactive mattress seems to be about 8".
I am 6 2" 200lb and want to make sure that mattress will feel the same after it settles.
I’m not sure who you were talking with there and that’s unfortunate but Scott is very knowledgeable and it may be worthwhile asking to talk with him instead to make sure that the information you are receiving is accurate. They may have been providing information about a different mattress.
The height of a mattress has little meaning in terms of support, comfort, or durability because all of these depend on the specifics of the materials and components inside it much more than the height and the height of a mattress is more of a side effect of the design goal and components in the mattress than a spec that has meaning by itself. Having said that … in a more “apples to apples” comparison between two mattresses where the layers and components are otherwise the same … thicker mattresses can have a greater and more gradual range of compression between softer and firmer as you compress them more deeply which can sometimes be helpful for the mattress to adapt different sleeping positions or for those that are in higher weight ranges so that the mattress doesn’t become too firm too quickly or “feel” like it’s bottoming out (see post #14 here).
I would add a STRONG caution here though not to let height influence you in your decision because this would only be relevant if you were comparing mattresses with the same layers and components (such as 6" of latex to 10" of latex that is the same type and blend and firmness) which isn’t the case here so I would use careful testing to decide which mattress is the best match for you in terms of PPP (Posture and alignment, Pressure relief, and Personal preferences) rather than a much less significant or meaningful spec such as the height of the mattress. The durability of a mattress also depends on the type and quality of the materials inside it … not the height (see post #4 here).
Congratulations on your new mattress … you certainly made a good choice
You can see my comments about a flexible slat system in post #2 here. If your testing indicates that it’s a better match for you in terms of PPP than a solid non flexing foundation then it would certainly be worthwhile but if it doesn’t make a meaningful difference for you then it probably wouldn’t.
The support I receive from the mattress is good so far, but i guess I will learn more in the next few weeks of use.
I was curious about the system in terms of supporting the mattress itself.
I feel that the spacing of the slates may not allow for the full support of the coils. Would it cause deformation of the coil base and void warranty?
They are fine for supporting the mattress (they have used them for many years without any issues) but the more important factor is whether they would improve your alignment in all your sleeping positions … or at least be “enough” of an improvement to justify the higher cost.
You can see an example here from earlier today from another member where the flexible foundation made a clear difference.
My bed has 1x3 slats with 4in gap between. Since my new mattress uses smaller coils I was afraid that large gaps may have adverse affect on its integrity.
I contacted BE about correct measurement of the gap between slats. I got a reply from Andrea stating that suggested distance between the slats to be less than 1 Âľ". Solved the issue by going to Home Depot and getting 11 1x2 slats (oak wood)

I know that their own support systems are fine in terms of the width of the gaps but if your platform bed had 4" gaps then that would certainly be too wide for the mattress and I’m glad you asked them and added some slats to your bed.
