Hi all! I’ve searched around a bit for related topics but haven’t been able to come up with anything super specific to my needs. A few months ago I slept on what I came to find out was a Zinus (memory foam?) mattress with a 3" Zinus memory foam topper on top. I was blown away by how comfortable the bed was as I slept better than I ever have - I loved the sinking/contouring feeling of the memory foam. Looking online, I found that Zinus is supposedly not the greatest quality mattress brand, so I did some research and trying out mattresses. I found that I really love the plush mattresses. I ended up purchasing a 14" Chill Memory Foam mattress from DreamFoam. After sleeping on it for 2-3 weeks, I am not having nearly the same experience as I did before and am experiencing a lot of lower back pain. The mattress is definitely too firm as I don’t get that sinking/conforming feeling that I loved so much in my previous experience. There was one mattress that I tried at a local mattress store (Midwest Mattress) that I felt was really comfortable, however when I asked the salesman for any of the density specifications he Googled some numbers off of a generic website and gave me his answer “from personal experience in the business”, so I decided to purchase elsewhere and landed on the personally uncomfortable DreamFoam bed in a box that I sleep on now.
I sent a message to BedGear (the makers of the bed at the mattress store that I enjoyed) asking what the specifications of that bed are, and am waiting to hear back. I realistically don’t expect to be blown away by the numbers, so I’m trying to plan forward a bit here. I’ve looked at quite a few mattresses online but I: 1) am a bit worried about purchasing a bed before trying it again and 2) am having a very difficult time finding quality, plush-feeling memory foam mattresses online. I was hoping someone could possibly steer me in the right direction here. I know that you guys generally don’t make specific recommendations, and I’ve looked at SleepLikeTheDead recommendations and your trusted sellers, however I am really struggling to find a quality plush memory foam mattress.
Sorry to hear you are experiencing lower back pain on your current mattress.
To quote our expert, Phoenix…
Without knowing your height/weight and sleeping positions, it is hard for me say much more about why you might be having this experience. You can read about the different support needs based on sleeping position here.
For people of average height and weight, we would recommend that any memory foam is at least 4 lb per cubic foot. You can read more here in our Mattress Durability Guidelines.
Regardless of which manufacturer or retailer you ultimately select, I’d make sure to have a detailed conversation with your finalists and provide them with your stats, body type, sleeping styles, general preferences and history, some general information about your current mattress, or what you have tested, and any other specific information or circumstances that could affect your choice of a mattress so they can help you choose which may be your best fit from their inventory.
I hope this helps point you in a useful direction!
Did you ever hear anything back from BedGear regarding the M3 mattress? A salesman was talking it up in the store today but reading online I’m unable to get anything about what type of foam it is (it sounds like a type of memory foam but not clear) and no information regarding density. If anyone else has any additional information regarding the types of foam used by BedGear it would be much appreciated. I liked the modular aspect of the coils (which can be easily replaced and also adjust firmness).
Main concerns are around durability of the foam (with no density listed and unknown whether it’s memory foam or some other type) and whether the advertised breathability and coolness of sleep is accurate or if it’s just a sales gimmick in store. It definitely feels cool in store, but who knows if they have fans or something hooked up to accentuate air flow that isn’t what you’ll experience once at home.
